Optimal Checkpoint Times for a Computer System with Hardware and Software Failures

Tasks with random processing times of a computer system are executed successively. Checkpoint methods can be placed at the end of tasks. Two types of checkpoints are called Journal Checkpoint (JC) and Flush Checkpoint (FC) where JC needs a small time compared with FC to store checkpoint data, and FC needs a long time compared with JC to store checkpoint data. The problem is that in what places we set suitable checkpoints. The mean execution times per one task are obtained and optimal numbers which minimize them are derived analytically and numerically.
Commuter Airframe Maintenance Considering Replacement between Two Regions

Aircrafts are indispensable transport facilities today the short-distance transport which are called commuter airlines (regional airlines), are remarked. Airframes are manufactured with aluminum alloys and are degraded by environmental stress such as the briny air. The degradation of a same type of airframe in a same region is determined statistically. Airline companies operate their commuter aircrafts in each regions and sometimes replace them. When an airframe is replaced between two places, the environmental stress in a previous region could remain after replacement. In this paper, we offer a preventive maintenance policy of a commuter airframe which is replaced between two distinguished places.

Many peptide hormones and neuropeptides are produced from larger, inactive precursors though endoproteolysis at sites usually marked by paired basic residues (primarily Lys-Arg and Arg-Arg), or occasionally by a monobasic residue (primarily Arg). Based upon data concerning processing of prorenin and its mutants around the native Lys-Arg cleavage site expressed in mouse pituitary AtT-20 cells, we present the following sequence rules that govern mono-arginyl cleavages: (a) a basic residue at the fourth (position-4) or the sixth(position-6) residue upstream of the cleavage site is required, (b) at position - 4, Arg ; more favorable than Lys, and (c) at position I, a hydrophobic aliphatic residue is not suitable. These rules are compatible with those proposed by comparison of precursor sequences around mono-arginyl cleavage sites. We also provide evidence that precursor cleavages at mono-arginly and dibasic sites can be catalyzed by the same Kex2-like processing endoprotease, PC1/PC3.
Optimal Number of Intelligent Nodes of Distributed Communication Processing for a Cloud System

Recently, distributed communication processing for a cloud system has been proposed for the purpose of reduce response time to clients [1, 2, 3, 4]. The cloud system consists of some intelligent nodes as well as a data center. The intelligent node provides client service near clients. The data center manages all of client information and application software. In order to reduce response time to more clients, we had better manage many intelligent nodes. But it has prohibit costs. We propose an optimal policy to reduce the management cost of intelligent nodes. We formulate a stochastic model of a server system with a certain number of intelligent nodes and derive the expected numbers of the replication and of application processing. Further, we derive the cost effectiveness and discuss an optimal number of intelligent nodes to minimize it.

The rainfall-type classification method which gives a judgment of the presence of the melting layer in addition to a conventional convective-stratiform classification was developed using a C-band polarimetric radar. The convective-stratiform separation was conducted based on the horizontal Zhh field. The melting layer was detected using the vertical profile of phv. Four rainfall types are identified by a combination of these two classifications: 1) convective rainfall with melting layer, 2) convective rainfall with no melting layer, 3) stratiform rainfall with melting layer, and 4) stratiform rainfall with no melting layer.
General Inspection Policies with Renewal Points

Most systems have to be checked at suitable times to detect their failures. By applying an interarrival distribution of a renewal process to fit distributions of an inspection policy, this research investigates three modified inspection policies: inspection first, last and overtime. We obtain their total expected inspection costs and optimal inspection times analytically. Finally, these three types of inspection first, last and overtime policies are compared with periodic inspection policy and are described in a numerical example.

<P>The Multipurpose InfraRed Imaging System (MIRIS) performed the MIRIS Pact Galactic Plane Survey (MIPAPS), which covers the entire Galactic plane within the latitude range of -3 degrees less than or similar to b less than or similar to +3 degrees at Pa alpha (1.87 mu m). We present the first result of the MIPAPS data extracted from the longitude range of l = 96 degrees.5-116.degrees 3 and demonstrate the quality and scientific potential of the data by comparing them with Ha maps obtained from the INT Photometric H alpha Survey (IPHAS) data. We newly identify 90 H II region candidates in the WISE H II region catalog as definite H II regions by detecting the Pa alpha and/or H alpha recombination lines, out of which 53 H II regions are detected at Pa alpha. We also report the detection of an additional 29 extended and 18 point-like sources at Pa alpha. We estimate the E(B-V) color excesses and total Lyman continuum luminosities for H II regions by combining the MIPAPS Pact and IPHAS H alpha fluxes. The E(B-V) values are found to be systematically lower than those estimated from point stars associated with H II regions. Utilizing the MIPAPS Pact and IPHAS H alpha images, we obtain an E(B-V) map for the entire region of the H II region Sh2-131 with an angular size of -2 degrees.5. The E(B-V) map shows not only numerous high-extinction filamentary features but also negative E(B-V) regions, indicating H alpha excess. The Ha excess and systematic underestimation of E(B-V) are attributed to light scattered by dust.</P>
