      • Maturity of the procurement process in small and medium-size enterprises: a benchmarking of hospitals and metal-mechanic companies

        ( Gerson Tontini(prof. Dr. ) ),( Luciano Castro De Carvalho(prof. Dr. ) ),( Nair Fernandes Da Costa Schlindwein(msc. ) ),( Victor Tomarevski ) 한국품질경영학회 2015 한국품질경영학회 학술대회 Vol.2015 No.2

Purpose: Presenting a practical instrument for self-evaluation of procurement management maturity, applicable to small and medium-size companies, showing how the use of this evaluating tool may help a company to decide what improve in its procurement processes. Design/methodology/approach: Based on a practical and theoretical framework, the developed instrument measures maturity of procurement management activities of four macro processes: (1) Materials management, (2) Acquisition process, (3) Supplier evaluation process, and (4) Procurement planning process. For testing the self-evaluation instrument, we evaluate the maturity level of procurement processes of 48 hospitals and 37 metal-mechanic manufacturing companies, located in the south region of Brazil. To show how to use the instrument for benchmarking, and deciding what to improve, we carry out a practical benchmarking of one Hospital and one Metal-mechanic Company in relation to the researched sample. For helping organizations to compare its maturity, and researchers further apply this instrument; the full questionnaire is available contacting the first author. Findings: The results show that the instrument is reliable for practical application. Metal-mechanical industries have a greater maturity of the acquisition process than of the other evaluated macro-processes. Regarding hospitals, it shows that the management of materials is more mature than the three other macro-processes. Comparing hospitals to metal-mechanic companies, the present research shows that, between 20 and 99 employees, hospitals tend to have a higher level of maturity than metal-mechanical companies do. With 100 employees or more, metal-mechanical companies are more mature than hospitals in procurement planning and selection/evaluation of suppliers. Originality/value: Presenting a useful instrument for self-evaluation, this work demonstrates how maturity level measurement and benchmarking may help a company to decide what improve in its procurement process, and how a sector can better understand itself. Few scientific works present practical application of maturity evaluation of procurement management, and we did not find other that presents a comparison of different segments.

      • The Offer of Advanced Imaging Techniques Leads to Higher Acceptance Rates for Screening Colonoscopy - a Prospective Study

Albrecht, Heinz,Gallitz, Julia,Hable, Robert,Vieth, Michael,Tontini, Gian Eugenio,Neurath, Markus Friedrich,Riemann, Jurgen Ferdinand,Neumann, Helmut Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.8

Background: Colonoscopy plays a fundamental role in early diagnosis and management of colorectal cancer and requires public and professional acceptance to ensure the ongoing success of screening programs. The aim of the study was to prospectively assess whether patient acceptance rates to undergo screening colonoscopy could be improved by the offer of advanced imaging techniques. Materials and Methods: Overall, 372 randomly selected patients were prospectively included. A standardized questionnaire was developed that inquired of the patients their knowledge regarding advanced imaging techniques. Second, several media campaigns and information events were organized reporting about advanced imaging techniques, followed by repeated evaluation. After one year the evaluation ended. Results: At baseline, 64% of the patients declared that they had no knowledge about new endoscopic methods. After twelve months the overall grade of information increased significantly from 14% at baseline to 34%. The percentage of patients who decided to undergo colonoscopy because of the offer of new imaging methods also increased significantly from 12% at baseline to 42% after 12 months. Conclusions: Patients were highly interested in the offer of advanced imaging techniques. Knowledge about these techniques could relatively easy be provided using local media campaigns. The offer of advanced imaging techniques leads to higher acceptance rates for screening colonoscopies.
