Risk Factors and Costs of Oral Cancer in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Delhi
Goyal, Sandeep,Tiwari, Vijay Kumar,Nair, Kesavan Sreekantan,Raj, Sherin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.4
The present study conducted with 100 oral cancer patients at a private tertiary care hospital in Delhidemonstrated that stage III cancer was associated with longer use of tobacco and poor oral hygiene. There was also statistically significant association (p<.05) between consumption of tobacco and alcohol. More than 60% treatment expenditure was on surgery followed by accommodation (9%) and investigations (8%). The effect of tobacco was well known among patients as 76% of the patients knew that common cancer in tobacco chewer is 'oral cancer', 22% of the patients however responded that they did not know which cancer is common in tobacco chewers. 58% said that they learnt about ill effects of tobacco from media while 24% said they learnt from family and friends. Out of 78 tobacco users, 60 (77%) said that they never received help to quit tobacco while 18(23%) have received help to quit.

Multifunctional and durable nano-coating of titanium dioxide (TiO2) on cotton and silk fabric surface has been achieved via sol–gel method in aqueous medium at room temperature. The nanosol is coated on fabric surface by pad-dry-cure method using 1% acrylic binder to achieve durable coating. The coated fabrics are characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The performance of the coated fabrics against self-cleaning efficiency and UV protection is evaluated. The self-cleaning efficiency is assessed against the artificial stain of Schezwan chutney, coffee, Coca-Cola, and turmeric. Maximum stain removal efficiency is achieved with coffee stain with 81.25% and 96.63% for cotton and silk fabrics, respectively, after exposure to 20 h of sunlight. However, tensile strength and elongation of the coated fabrics decrease after the exposure to sunlight. The average size of the TiO2 particles formulated in the nanosol is found to be about 5 nm which is sufficient for scattering the UV radiation from the textile surface. The self-cleaning effect and UPF of nanosol-treated silk fabric are found to be better than that of cotton fabric. UPF of treated cotton and silk fabric is found to be 53.87 and 61.79, respectively.

A conventional vapor compression refrigeration system (VCRS) cascaded with a heat-assisted ejector refrigeration system (ERS) has been experimentally analyzed. Cascading allows the VCRS to operate at lower condenser temperatures and thus achieve a higher coefficient of performance. In this cascaded system, the condenser of the vapor compression system does not dissipate its heat directly to the evaporator of the ERS; instead, water circulates between the condenser of VCRS and the evaporator of ERS to exchange the heat. Seven ejectors of different geometries have been used in the ERS; however, all the ejectors could not maintain thermal equilibrium at the desired operating conditions. The compressor of the cascaded VCRS consumed 1.3 times less power than the noncascaded VCRS. Furthermore, the cascaded system provided a maximum 87.74% improvement in COP over the noncascaded system for the same operating conditions. The performance of the system remained constant until the critical condenser pressure of the ERS.

Kombucha mutualistic community (KMC) is composed by acetic acid bacteria and yeasts, producing fermented tea with health benefits. As part of the BIOlogy and Mars EXperiment (BIOMEX) project, the effect of Mars-like conditions on the KMC was analyzed. Here, we analyzed metagenomeassembled genomes (MAGs) of the Komagataeibacter, which is a predominant genus in KMC, to understand their roles in the KMC after exposure to Mars-like conditions (outside the International Space Station) based on functional genetic elements. We constructed three MAGs: K. hansenii, K. rhaeticus, and K. oboediens. Our results showed that (i) K. oboediens MAG functionally more complex than K. hansenii, (ii) K. hansenii is a keystone in KMCs with specific functional features to tolerate extreme stress, and (iii) genes related to the PPDK, betaine biosynthesis, polyamines biosynthesis, sulfate-sulfur assimilation pathway as well as type II toxin-antitoxin (TA) system, quorum sensing (QS) system, and cellulose production could play important roles in the resilience of KMC after exposure to Mars-like stress. Our findings show the potential mechanisms through which Komagataeibacter tolerates the extraterrestrial stress and will help to understand minimal microbial composition of KMC for space travelers.

ABSTRACT
New chemotherapeutic agents with novel mechanisms of action are urgently required to combat the challenge imposed by the emergence of drug-resistant mycobacteria. In this study, a phenotypic whole-cell screen identified 5-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline (5NP) as a lead compound. 5NP-resistant isolates harbored mutations that were mapped to fbiB and were also resistant to the bicyclic nitroimidazole PA-824. Mechanistic studies confirmed that 5NP is activated in an F420-dependent manner, resulting in the formation of 1,10-phenanthroline and 1,10-phenanthrolin-5-amine as major metabolites in bacteria. Interestingly, 5NP also killed naturally resistant intracellular bacteria by inducing autophagy in macrophages. Structure-activity relationship studies revealed the essentiality of the nitro group for in vitro activity, and an analog, 3-methyl-6-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline, that had improved in vitro activity and in vivo efficacy in mice compared with that of 5NP was designed. These findings demonstrate that, in addition to a direct mechanism of action against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, 5NP also modulates the host machinery to kill intracellular pathogens.
