        A purine-type heat shock protein 90 inhibitor promotes the heat shock response in Arabidopsis

        Geldanamycin is a macrocyclic heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) inhibitor that suppresses cancer cell proliferation. Since geldanamycin also promotes the heat shock response (HSR) in cells, this compound is used as a chemical inducer of the HSR in Arabidopsis. Although many types of HSP90 inhibitors that are different from the macrocyclic types have been developed in pharmaceutical research, non-macrocyclic HSP90 inhibitors have not been investigated in terms of whether they can induce the HSR in plants. Here, we determined the HSR-inducing activities in Arabidopsis of 10 non-macrocyclic HSP90 inhibitors including 2 benzamide derivatives, 3 purine derivatives, and 5 resorcinol derivatives. Among the tested inhibitors, PU-H71, which is a purine derivative, showed the highest HSR-inducing activity. The activity of PU-H71 was significantly higher than that of geldanamycin. The application of PU-H71 induced the HSR in all Arabidopsis seedlings. The HSP17.6C-CI and HSP70 proteins accumulated after the treatment with PU-H71. The seedlings treated with PU-H71 maintained more chlorophyll than the control seedlings after the heat stress. These results suggest that the purine-derivative HSP90 inhibitor PU-H71 enhanced the heat tolerance of Arabidopsis by promoting the HSR in the plant.

        Unsteady Flow Condition of Centrifugal Pump for Low Viscous Fluid Food

        Fluid machineries for fluid food have been used in wide variety of field i.e. transportation, filling, and improvement of quality of fluid food. The flow condition of these fluid machineries is quite complicated because the fluid food is different from water. Therefore, a design method based on the internal flow condition is not conducted. In this research, a turbo-pump having small number of blades was used to decrease shear loss and keep wide flow passage. In previous studies, it was found that internal flow condition was complex in the test pump, but those flow phenomena were not clarified in detail. In order to investigate the complex internal flow condition, the unsteady numerical analysis using low viscous fluid was conducted. In this paper, the relation between the blade geometry and the performance was investigated. In addition to that, the internal flow condition of the centrifugal pump using low viscous fluid was clarified by the numerical analysis results.

        Factors Affecting the Swallowing Dysfunction Following Oral Cancer Surgery

        Objective To investigate the factors affecting the postoperative swallowing dysfunction in patients who underwent oral cancer surgery. Methods Retrospective review of clinical records of 70 patients (50 males and 20 females) who underwent oral cancer surgeries from July 2007 to April 2015 were enrolled. Multiple regression analysis was performed using the Food Intake LEVEL Scale (FILS) at discharge as the objective variable and age, tumor size, resection of the tongue base, suprahyoid muscle resection, segmental mandibulectomy, neck dissection and radiation therapy as the explanatory variables in 70 patients. In addition, multiple regression analysis was performed between objective variables, which include maximum hyoid bone movement, laryngeal elevation delay time, pharyngeal constriction ratio (PCR), residue in the vallecular and pear-shaped depression (pyriform sinuses), and Penetration-Aspiration Scale score and one of the main factors representing the characteristics of each case as the explanatory variables, and age was treated as an adjustment factor in 23 patients. Results The FILS shows significant negative correlation by age and resection of the tongue base. In videofluoroscopic swallowing study, the maximum movement, PCR and residue in the vallecular are significantly correlated with factors demonstrating the characteristic for each case. Conclusion It was suggested that in elderly patients, the presence of more than half of the tongue base resection, suprahyoid muscle resection and neck dissection cause severe dysphagia after surgery.
