‘Fuji’/M.9 apple trees were mechanically root pruned with tractor-mounted root pruner, parallel to the row of 30 ㎝ from the trunk, to the depth of 30 ㎝, 1) both sides at bud-break stage, 2) both sides at full bloom stage, 3) one side at full bloom stage, 4) one side at fruitlet stage, or 5) untreated as control. Root pruning both sides at bud-break stage or at full bloom stage reduced vegetative growth and yield so much as total shoot length by 54.4% or 58.4% and yield per tree by 75.4% or 70.9%, respectively, compared with controls. However, root-pruning one side parallel to the row at full bloom stage or at fruitlet stage was less affected on vegetative growth than root pruning both sides at bud-break or full bloom stage, not severely reducing fruit growth and yield per tree. Enhanced light penetration in the canopy by root pruning increased fruit color and soluble solid content in the year of treatment and tree flowering the following year.
Prohexadione-Calcium을 이용한 ‘후지’ 사과나무의 생장조절

Prohexadione-calcium (Pro-Ca), an inhibitor of gibberellin biosynthesis, was applied to vigorous ‘Fuji’/M.9 apple trees in high density orchard and its effects on vegetative growth and reproductive performance were evaluated. The inhibiting effect of Pro-Ca on terminal shoot growth was observed from one week after the application of chemical and first flush of shoot growth ceased in late-May, about 2 weeks earlier than that in control trees. Shoot regrowth at the end of July was observed in all Pro-Ca treatments and regrowth ratio at the end of growing season ranged from 19.8 to 33.9%. Early one foliar treatment of Pro-Ca 300 ㎎ㆍL?¹ reduced total shoot length to 39.4% compared to the control and other applications in concentration of 150, 200, and 250 ㎎ㆍL?¹ reduced to 27.9~29.5%. However, after 4 weeks from first application of Pro-Ca 150, 200, and 250 ㎎ㆍL?¹, supplementary spray of respectively 150, 100, and 50 ㎎ㆍL?¹ showed no significant growth reduction compared to one application in same concentrations. Appropriate shoot growth reduction in response to Pro-Ca did no certain negative effect on reproductive parameters and not induce tree flowering in the following year.
