Successful Entomological Intervention against Anopheles sinensis, Limiting transmission of Plasmodium vivax to American Soldiers in the Republic of Korea

        Strickman, Daniel,Miller, Mary-E.,Lee, Kwan-Woo,Kim, Heung-Chul,Wirtz, Robert-A.,Perich, Michael,Novakoski, William-L.,Feighner, Brian-H.,Roh, Cheon-Seop 한국곤충학회 2001 Entomological Research Vol.31 No.3

The Republic of Korea (ROK) has been experiencing an expanding epidemic of Plasmodium vivax malaria since 1993, with most cases occurring near the Demilitarized Zone in the northwestern part of the country. During 1996 and 1997, U.S. Army preventive medicine assets undertook a program of surveillance and vector control to reduce transmission to U.S. Forces Korea (USFK). In 1996, the total number of cases was low and only routine vector control (ULV applications of malathion in early evening, availability of repellent for soldiers without command emphasis) was undertaken. Surveillance in 1996 indicated that Anopheles sinensis Wiedemann was the vector and that the risk to unprotected troops was high (1 of 361 mosquitoes infected in one area with 30 bites/person per night, 1 of 1,559 mosquitoes infected in another area with biting rate of 130/person/night). All night collections showed that most biting was occurring late at night, between 2300 and 0300 hrs. Expecting more transmission in 1997, a coordinated program (which did not include chemoprophylaxis) was initiated in which physicians, military commanders, and entomology assets all played a role. The following entomological interventions were concentrated at the site of highest risk, Camp Bonifas: 1) application of residual insecticide to tents, barracks, and bed nets, 2) ULV application of resmethrin late at night, 3) replacement and repair of screens, 4) use of permethrin treated bednets in unscreened billets, and 5) command emphasis on use of repellents and proper wear of the permethrin-treated uniform. Camp Bonifas experienced a 40% decrease in malaria cases (from 5 cases in 1996 to 3 cases in 1997) compared to a 243% increase in other American troops (from 7 to 24 cases) and a 306% increase (from 285 to 1,156 cases) in ROK Army troops. Although more effective use of ULV and application of larvicides would probably have improved the result, we conclude that entomological interventions without chemoprophylaxis reduced malaria transmission at Camp Bonifas by 82% in 1997.

New Record for the Subspecies, Aedes vexans vexans in Korea(Diptera : Culicidae)

        Lee, Kwan-Woo,Strickman, Daniel-A.,Miller, Mary-E.,Kim, Heung-Chul 한국곤충학회 1998 Entomological Research Vol.28 No.1

As a part of malaria vector mosquito study, human biting collections were conducted from 16 May to 18 September 1997 at Taesong-Dong, Paju, in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), Republic of Korea. During these collections, Aedes (Aedimorphus) vexans vexans (Meigen), 1830 was identified for the first time in Korea. Voucher specimens are being maintained at the 5th Medical Detachment, U.S. Army, Korea.

Seasonal Prevalence and Feeding Activity of Anopheles sinensis (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Northwestern Part of Kyonggi Province, Republic of Korea

        Kim, Heung-Chul,Strickman, Daniel-A.,Lee, Kwan-Woo 한국곤충학회 2000 Entomological Research Vol.30 No.3

Studies on seasonal prevalence and population density of Anopheles sinensis were carried out in the Munsan area at the northwestern part of Kyonggi province in 1994~1997. A total of 18 species in 5 genera were collected using New Jersey light traps. In addition, weekly human biting collections were performed at Taesongdong, close to the DMZ area from 15 May to 10 September, 1997. A total of 17 species in 5 genera were collected in the biting collections. Anopheles sinensis showed two peaks of biting activity at 22:00~24:00 and at 02:00~04:00 in July. In August the times shifted to a different biphasic pattern with peaks at 20:00~22:00 and at 02:00~06:00. In September there was only one peak in biting activity at 19:00~21:00.

Seasonal Prevalence of Mosquitoes Collected from Light Traps in Korea (1997~1998)

        Kim, Heung-Chul,Lee, Kwan-Woo,Miller, William-B.,Strickman, Daniel 한국곤충학회 2001 Entomological Research Vol.31 No.1

The results of adult mosquito collections from 1997 through 1998 on 14 U.S. military installations located in six provinces in Korea are presented. Adult mosquitoes were collected in New Jersey light traps from 15 May to 15 October each year. This surveillance was performed in order to determine the appropriate time for insecticidal application at these Army installations. A total of 56,998 and 59,647 adults were collected in 1997 and 1998 respectively, being comprised of 46,763 (82.0%) females and 10,235 (18.0%) males in 1997, and 47,078 (78.9%) females and 12,569 (21.1 %) males in 1998. Among the total of 23 species in 6 genera, the most common species were Anopheles sinensis (45.6%), Culex tritaeniorhynchus (29.0%), Aedes vexans nipponii (12.1 %) and Culex pipiens pallens (12.0%). Anopheles sinensis increased by 2.9% and Culex tritaeniorhynchus decreased by 3.1 % between the two years. According to the weekly population density, Anopheles sinensis at the Munsan area was more abundant in August than in July, which was an unusual pattern. The trap index for 1997~1998 was 2.5~5 times higher than that of 1995~1996.

Seasonal Prevalence of Mosquitoes Collected from Light Trap in Korea (1995~1996)

        Kim, Heung-Chul,Lee, Kwan-Woo,Klein, Terry A.,Strickman, Daniel A. 한국곤충학회 1999 Entomological Research Vol.29 No.3

The results of adult mosquito collections on 12 U.S. Military Installations located in five provinces in Korea from 1995 to 1996 are presented. New Jersey light traps were operated for adult collection from 15 May to 15 October each year. This surveillance was performed to determine when to recommend insecticide spraying for mosquito control to these Army installations. A total of 39,738 and 24,318 adults were collected in 1995 and 1996 respectively, being comprised of 34,750 (87.4%) females and 4,988 (12.6%) males in 1995, and 19,231 (79.1 %) females and 5,087 (20.9%) males in 1996. Among the total 20 species comprising 6 Genera, Gulex tritaeniorhynchus (43.9%), Anopheles sinensis (25.0%), Culex pipiens pallens (20.9%) and Aedes vexans nipponii (9.4%) were most common species. A density increase of almost 12.7% ofthe Anopheles sinensis proportion from 1995 to 1996 and a decrease of 31.6% for the Culex tritaeniorhynchus proportion was observed for the same years.
