A Framework of Managing Supply Chain Disruption Risks Using Network Reliability

Ohmori, Shunichi,Yoshimoto, Kazuho Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers 2013 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.12 No.2

This paper discusses how to manage supply chain disruption risks from natural disasters or other low-likelihood-high-impact risk drivers. After the catastrophic earthquake in Eastern Japan and the severe flood in Thailand, most companies have been attempting to re-establish the business continuity plan to prevent their supply chain from disruption. However, the challenges for managers and individual risks are often interrelated, and thus, actions that mitigate one risk can end up being no contribution as a whole. In this paper, we describe a framework for assessing how much impact individual mitigation strategies have on the entire supply chain protection against disruption, using network reliability. We propose three categories of risk-mitigation approaches: Stabilization, Absorption, and Duplication. We analyze the situation under which each of these strategies is the best suitable. With a clear understanding of relations between these mitigation strategies and the entire supply chain risks, managers can select effective risk-reduction approaches to their supply chain.

Max–Min Fairness Approach for Collaborative Vehicle Routing Cost Allocation

        Shunichi Ohmori,Kazuho Yoshimoto 대한산업공학회 2021 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.20 No.3

We consider a collaborative vehicle-routing problem involving two or more companies jointly operating delivery fulfillment. It is known that the collaborative routing improves the delivery efficiency that results in a lower cost, CO₂ emission, and traffic congestions. However, cost allocation is a major challenge in the establishment of collaboration because each company has a set of customers whose locations and demands are different. In this paper, we propose an optimization-based framework for determining the optimal vehicle routing and cost allocation of companies in a collaboration, in an unbiased manner. The proposed method relies on max–min fairness that is a widely accepted concept. We formulated this problem as a multi-objective optimization problem. Thereafter, we reformulated the single-objective problem in which the fairness is considered by maximizing the minimum utility of each company in the collaboration. We quantify the utility by applying a fuzzy membership function based on the gained cost benefit. We present computational results ranging from 10 to 80 customers. In all cases, significant improvements are observed in the cost-benefit balance each company gains over the one obtained through the methods compared.

A Routing Problem in Global Production Planning

        Qian Huang,Jiahua Weng,Shunichi Ohmori,Kazuho Yoshimoto 대한산업공학회 2020 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.19 No.2

The paper proposes an integrated approach for global production planning of production, transportation, and sales problems wherein transportation routing must be optimized simultaneously. Multi-market, multi-product, multi-plant, and multi-path frameworks comprise the research contexts. The objective of this study is to determine how to maximize total profit with path-selection of marine transportation. Products are transported from plants to markets by marine shippers that are business partners of the manufacturer. Unit production costs from each plant to each market are not constant in this study, changing according to transportation path, and discount policy on each liner. Since the proposed model is a nonlinear problem with a nonconvex objective function and has nonlinear constraints, the model was linearized into a mixed-integer linear problem so that it could be solved with an optimization solver. moreover, computational experiments were conducted. the findings show that, because of transportation routing influences production allocation and sales operations, the proposed integrated approach is proven to be effective at increasing total profit and can be used as a decision support tool to aid global manufacturers to contract with transportation booking companies.
