A CMOS Analog Correlator-Based Painless Nonenzymatic Glucose Sensor Readout Circuit

<P>An analog correlator-based readout circuit for amperometric glucose electrochemical biosensors is designed and implemented in 0.35- μm CMOS process. The readout circuit offers lower noise and wider dynamic range compared with the conventional transimpedance amplifier architecture. The operational amplifier achieves a 118.3-dB gain and 47.3 ° phase margin. The readout circuit dc response for input range of 5-30 μA gives a linear output voltage range of 0.21-1.38 V. The total output rms noise is measured to be 6.6 m Vrms. It is applied for a microneedle glucose sensor and has a mean error of 1.6% and consumes 5.1 mW of power. The total area of the proposed readout circuit is 300 μm× 167 μm.</P>
Upcycling of face masks to application-rich multi- and single-walled carbon nanotubes

We report the use of face mask materials as a carbon precursor for the synthesis of multi- and single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in an open-loop chemical recycling process. Novel surgical mask precursors were suspended in toluene and injected into a chemical vapor deposition reactor previously optimized for CNT production using liquid injection. The CNTs were collected and characterized using resonant Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) before being turned into fibrils that were tested for electrical conductance. Once confirmed and repeated for statistical accuracy, a CNT-based Ethernet cable was manufactured and tested using iPerf3 for uplink and downlink speeds exceeding broadband standards worldwide. Radial breathing modes from Raman spectroscopy indicate single walled CNTs (SWCNTs) with diameters ranging from 0.8 to 1.55 nm and this matches well with TEM observations of SWCNTs with 1.5 nm diameter. This work pushes the horizon of feedstocks useful for CNT and SWCNT production in particular; this work demonstrates upcycling of materials fated for disposal into materials with positive net value and plenty of real-world applications.
H2-MHR PRE-CONCEPTUAL DESIGN SUMMARY FOR HYDROGEN PRODUCTION

Hydrogen and electricity are expected to dominate the world energy system in the long term. The world currently consumes about 50 million metric tons of hydrogen per year, with the bulk of it being consumed by the chemical and refining industries. The demand for hydrogen is expected to increase, especially if the U.S. and other countries shift their energy usage towards a hydrogen economy, with hydrogen consumed as an energy commodity by the transportation, residential and commercial sectors. However, there is strong motivation to not use fossil fuels in the future as a feedstock for hydrogen production, because the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide is a byproduct and fossil fuel prices are expected to increase significantly. An advanced reactor technology receiving considerable international interest for both electricity and hydrogen production, is the modular helium reactor (MHR), which is a passively safe concept that has evolved from earlier high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) designs. For hydrogen production, this concept is referred to as the H2-MHR. Two different hydrogen production technologies are being investigated for the H2-MHR; an advanced sulfur-iodine (SI) thermochemical water splitting process and high-temperature electrolysis (HTE). This paper describes pre-conceptual design descriptions and economic evaluations of full-scale, nth-of-a-kind SI-Based and HTE-Based H2-MHR plants. Hydrogen production costs for both types of plants are estimated to be approximately $2 per kilogram.
Sneak Peek into Tobacco Habits and Associated Insidious Oral Lesions in an Odisha Sample Population

Background: Tobacco use in various forms, including with Areca nut, causes several potentially malignant disorders. Many lesions may transform into oral squamous cell carcinoma. Although patients may be aware of the hazards of tobacco habits, the lesions by themselves are insidious in nature resulting in failure of patients to present to general dentists/specialists at early stages. Our aim was to study the types of habits prevalent in the region of Rourkela in Orissa and to assess the insidious nature of the lesions associated with these habits. Not many studies have been done from this part of India. Materials and Methods: A camp was conducted for habitual users of tobacco and its products, Areca nut and other mixed habit users. A thorough history was taken of the type, duration and frequency of habits, symptoms of patients along with clinical examination by a single examiner. The data was entered in detail into an excel sheet and analysed. Results: 54.7% had lesions and 60.9 % of them were asymptomatic and rest had mild burning sensation while eating. There was a very low awareness of the presence of lesions among the patients. Conclusions: There is a need to spread the awareness of the ill effects of the tobacco and other associated habits far and wide and more importantly educate the general public on the appearance of associated lesions as these are almost always insidious in nature. The patients can self-examine, detect lesions early when present and approach the dentist at the earliest opportunity.

This paper addresses the need for efective curriculum-based measures (CBMs) to assess foundational literacy skills in India. It seeks to answer the questions: What is the reliability and validity of the FABLe app in the Indian context? What is the efcacy of the FABLe app in identifying students who are at-risk for reading difculties? There are currently no tools in place that can be used to screen and monitor early reading skills in elementary grades. We present data from a pilot study on India’s frst digital CBM tool, Fluency Assessment for Benchmarking in Literacy education (FABLe), to screen for and identify students at-risk for reading difculties. This study was conducted in Mumbai, India, and participants included students in Grade 3 attending an English medium private school. It serves three primary goals within the Indian context: (a) to examine reliability and validity data supporting the use of the tool; (b) to compare FABLe scores to teacher judgment; and (c) to identify the correct words per minute and accuracy levels below which students were identifed as being at-risk. These metrics are presented as an initial step towards developing preliminary CBM benchmarks for India.
