This paper develops an adaptive fuzzy control method for accommodating actuator faults in a class of unknown nonlinear systems with unmeasured states. The considered faults are modeled as lock-in-place (stuck at unknown place). With the help of fuzzy logic systems to approximate the unknown nonlinear functions, and K-filters are designed to estimate the unmeasured states. Combining the backstepping technique with the nonlinear fault-tolerant control theory, a novel adaptive fuzzy faults-tolerant control (FTC) approach is constructed. It is proved that the proposed control approach can guarantee that all the signals of the resulting closed-loop system are bounded and the tracking error between the system output and the reference signal converges to a small neighborhood of zero by ap-propriate choice of the design parameters. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the control approach.
Indentation deformation of mesoporous anodic aluminum oxide

Mechanical properties of anodic aluminum oxides (AAO) were achieved by means of a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an atomic force microscope (AFM), and indentation measurements. A two-step anodized mesoporous anodic aluminum oxide was successfully fabricated vertically and hollowly. Both microindentation and nanoindentation were carried out. Localized pop-in can be found during nanoindentation due to the collapse of the beneath cylindrical structures. Over a certain load, microindentation may induce radial cracks from the indented edge to outward of the AAO. The underside of the indented AAO sample was milled to figure out the structural changes. Observer-based Direct Adaptive Fuzzy Control of Uncertain Nonlinear Systems and Its Applications

A direct adaptive fuzzy control algorithm is developed for a class of uncertain SISO nonlinear systems. In this algorithm, it doesn’t require to assume that the system states are measurable. Therefore, it is needed to design an observer to estimate the system states. Compared with the numerous alternative approaches with respect to the observer design, the main advantage of the developed algorithm is that on-line computation burden is alleviated. It is proven that the developed algorithm can guarantee that all the signals in the closed-loop system are uniformly ultimately bounded and the tracking error converges to a small neighborhood around zero. The simulation examples validate the feasibility of the developed algorithm.

The big gap between efficacy of population level prevention and expectations due to heterogeneity and complexity of cancer etiologic factors calls for selective yet personalized interventions based on effective risk assessment. This paper documents our research protocol aimed at refining and validating a two-stage and web-based cancer risk assessment tool, from a tentative one in use by an ongoing project, capable of identifying individuals at elevated risk for one or more types of the 80% leading cancers in rural China with adequate sensitivity and specificity and featuring low cost, easy application and cultural and technical sensitivity for farmers and village doctors. The protocol adopted a modified population-based case control design using 72, 000 non-patients as controls, 2, 200 cancer patients as cases, and another 600 patients as cases for external validation. Factors taken into account comprised 8 domains including diet and nutrition, risk behaviors, family history, precancerous diseases, related medical procedures, exposure to environment hazards, mood and feelings, physical activities and anthropologic and biologic factors. Modeling stresses explored various methodologies like empirical analysis, logistic regression, neuro-network analysis, decision theory and both internal and external validation using concordance statistics, predictive values, etc..

Purpose: Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) has a poor prognosis. Abiraterone acetate (AA), enzalutamide, and chemotherapy are first-line treatments for patients with mCRPC. This study examined prognostic factors for AA response in the form of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) kinetics throughout androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) in chemonaïve patients with mCRPC. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively included data from 34 chemonaïve patients with mCRPC who had received AA at some point between January 2017 and December 2018. We separated patients into two study arms according to the decrease in PSA percentages after use of AA for 3 months. We correlated PSA kinetics parameters with response and compared the two study groups with respect to PSA kinetics. Results: The patients’ median age was 77 years. In the total group of patients, 64% had a response to AA, whereas 35% did not. The ratio of the PSA level at nadir to the level during ADT was significantly higher in the AA-sensitive group (19.78 vs. 1.03, p=0.019). Conclusions: Patients who experienced a dramatic change in PSA level during ADT were more likely to be resistant to AA after progression to mCRPC. Chemotherapy rather than AA might be more suitable as a first-line treatment for these patients.
