Si Photonics-based Beamformer for 5G Mobile Communications

The millimeter wave band has recently become important for 5G communication systems. In this paper, a high-performance analog beamformer implementation technique is proposed for the mmWave band. This scheme uses silicon photonics technology that can be miniaturized and made compatible with CMOS process without extra effort. Simulation results show that the proposed methods are efficient at implementing miniature array antennas in the mmWave band and are suitable for high-performance ultra-small analog beamformers and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) implementations for 5G.
