      • Role of Ultrasound in Characterization of Ovarian Masses

        Background: Ovarian cancer is the second most common malignancy in Pakistani women, accounting for 4% of all cancers in the female population. The aim of this study was to determine sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values and 95% confidence intervals for ultrasound in characterization of ovarian masses in patients presenting at public and private tertiary care hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan. Materials and Methods: We adopted a cross-sectional analytical study design to retrospectively collect data from January 2009-11 from medical records of two tertiary care hospitals. Using a non-probability purposive sampling technique, we recruited a sample of 86 women aged between 15 and 85 years fulfilling inclusion criteria with histopathologically proven ovarian masses presenting for an ultrasound examination in our radiology departments. Results: Our retrospective data depicted sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound to be 90.7%, 95%CI (0.77, 0.97) and 91.4%, 95%CI (0.76, 0.98) respectively. Positive predictive value was 93%, 95%CI (0.79, 0.98) and negative predictive value was 89%, 95%CI (0.73, 0.96). A total of 78 ovarian masses were detected, out of which 42 were malignant and 36 were benign. Conclusions: Results of our study further reinforce the conclusion that ultrasound should be used as an initial modality of choice in the workup of every woman suspected of having an ovarian mass. It not only results in decreasing the mortality but also avoids unnecessary surgical interventions.

        Text writing in the air

        This paper presents a real-time video-based pointing method that allows the sketching and writing of English text over air in front of a mobile camera. The proposed method has two main tasks. First, it tracks the colored fingertip in the video frames and then applies English optical character reorganization over the plotted images to recognize the written characters. Moreover, the proposed method provides a natural human-system interaction without requiring a keypad, stylus, pen, glove, or any other device for character inputs. For the experiments, an application was developed using OpenCv with the JAVA language. The proposed method was tested on a Samsung Galaxy3 android mobile phone. The proposed algorithm showed an average accuracy rate of 92.083% when tested for different shaped alphabets. Here, more than 3000 different shaped characters were used. The proposed system is a software-based approach and is relevantly very simple, fast, and easy to use. It does not require sensors or any hardware other than a camera and red tape, and is applicable to all disconnected languages. It has one issue, though it is color-sensitive in that the existence of any red-colored object in the background before the start of and during the character writing can lead to false results.

        Effect of CZTSe BSF and minority carrier life time on the efficiency enhancement of CZTS kesterite solar cell

        Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) is non-toxic earth abundant material and a promising quaternary semiconductor compound of group I-II-IV-VI having kesterite symmetrical structure. Due to its optimum direct band gap, it has been considered suitable material for absorber layer for photovoltaic solar cell applications. This paper presents numerical modeling of experimentally designed CZTS solar cell by applying CZTSe as back surface field (BSF) layer. In this work we reproduced results for experimentally designed CZTS solar cell in SCAPS software. The simulated results are validated and compared with real experimental results. After optimization of cell parameters conversion efficiency of an optimized device is increased up to 6.42% (with CZTS thickness of 0.8 μm). With further optimization and applying CZTSe BSF layer conversion efficiency increased up to 12.92%. Under 1.5 AM illumination condition from the proposed cell promising results had been achieved with short circuit current (Jsc) 27.41 mA/cm2, open circuit voltage (Voc) 744.4mV, fill factor (FF) 63.35% and corresponding to a total area conversion efficiency of 12.92%.
