Korean Internally-Headed Relatives and Their Potentially Homophonous Constructions
Sang-Hee Park(박상희),Saetbyol Seo(서샛별),Semoon Hoe(허세문) 한국언어학회 2020 언어 Vol.45 No.1
It is commonly acknowledged that Japanese internally headed relatives are homophonous with several other distinct constructions. This homophony has been the source of disagreement among researchers on the relevant data. In particular, Grosu & Hoshi (2019) argue that prima facie internally headed relatives with a referential head really are doubly headed relatives, but Kitagawa (2019) suggests that they are bona fide internally headed relatives. In this squib, we provide an initial assessment of the relevant data in Korean. Our data show that Korean internally headed relatives coexist with other possibly homophonous constructions that hitherto have rarely been discussed. Because doubly headed relatives are of questionable status in Korean, Grosu & Hoshi’s assumption that referential nominals are not appropriate as the internal head does not seem to hold. The findings of this squib, though tentative, raise intriguing questions concerning empirical facts about internally headed relatives of the Japanese/Korean kind and shed light on previous cross-linguistic assumptions on head-internal relatives.
