Protective Effect of Pterocarpus santalinus onGalactosamine Induced Liver Damage

Pterocarpus santalinus Linn on acute hepatotoxicity induced in Wistar albino rats by a single dose ofGalactosamine (400 mg/kg). Suspensions of methanolic extract of heartwood of P. santalinus (200 and 400 mg/kg)in 0.3% Carboxy Methyl Cellulose (CMC) were administered p.o. to experimental animals and hepatoprotectiveactivity was monitored by estimating aspartate amino transferase (ASAT, GOT), alanine amino transferase(ALAT, GPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin (TB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total cholesterolelevation of serum transaminases and alterations of biochemical parameters induced by hepatotoxin, andalleviated the degree of liver damage. The results were supported by histopathological studies of liver samplesshowing regeneration of hepatocytes in treated animals. Silymarin (25 mg/kg), a known hepatoprotective drug wasused for comparison. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that P. santalinus exerts hepatoprotectiveactivity and may serve as a useful adjuvant in several clinical conditions associated with liver damage.Keywords Pterocarpus santalinus
Saussurea lappa (Kuth root): review of its traditional uses, phytochemistry and pharmacology

Saussurea lappa Clarke (Compositae) is a traditionally known and potent plant which is well considered for its medicinal uses in different indigenous Indian systems of medicine. It is popularly known as Kuth root or costus and used in various traditional system of medicine for its anti-ulcer, anti-convulsant, anti-cancer, hepatoprotective, anti-arthritic, anti-viral activities. Several of its activities are well proved and established through in-vitro, in-vivo methods which gave a rationale scientific approach to the traditional claims. Phytochemical compounds isolated from this plant such as costunolide, Isodihydrocostunolide, cynaropicrin etc. were proven to be bio-active and potential source for developing new molecules. Due to the significant proven activities Saussurea lappa is having considerable chance for new drug discovery. This review is an effort to explore the different phytoconstituents and the pharmacological activities of Saussurea lappa.

To evaluate the anti-diarrheal potential of the leaves of Bauhinia purpurea Linn., investigations were performed on different animal models e.g. castor oil induced diarrhea in rats and gastrointestinal motility test by using charcoal meal. In both the models the ethanolic extract of the leaves showed significant activity when compared to control group. The group treated with standard anti-diarrheal agent also showed significant activity comparing with control. Thus this study establishes the efficacy of Bauhinia purpurea Linn. leaves as an anti-diarrheal as claimed in folklore.

Arterio-portal fistulas (APFs) are characterized by anomalous communication between arteries and the portal vein (PV) system. Treatment of APF is imperative as an emergency or if there is development of portal hypertension/heart failure in chronic cases. Both endovascular and surgical managements can be attempted, however since endovascular management carries comparatively low intra and post procedural morbidity it is mostly preferred. This is a case report on endovascular management of post-traumatic pseudoaneurysm arising from bifurcation of common hepatic artery with complete disruption of the gastroduodenal artery and high-flow APF. This report describes the intraprocedure challenges in exclusion of fistula from the circulation, without disruption of portal system and anticipation of recruitment of new collateral feeders to the fistula immediate post exclusion with its embolization, which needs appropriate positioning of the catheter prior to exclusion of the fistula.
