Surface Hardening of Titanium Using Gas Nitriding

In this study, a rotary barrel tank was employed with gas nitriding in an attempt to form a hard layer on the surface of pure titanium. Nitriding was carried out at 773 K to 1073 K for 3.6 ks to 32.4 ks. Alumina powders were used as the media that flowed in the barrel tank. A new surface hardening process was developed for forming hard layers on a pure titanium surface. A uniform hard layer could be formed on pure titanium surfaces using barrel nitriding. With barrel nitriding, the treatment time did not have an effect on the surface hardness, but had a strong effect on the depth of the hard layer. Moreover, nitrogen was able to diffuse into titanium surface,and TiN and Ti2N could be formed on the surface using this process.
