      • Coaches as a Potential Source of Athletes’ Self-Presentational Concern

Ross Lorimer 한국코칭능력개발원 2014 International Journal of Coaching Science Vol.8 No.1

This study examined the association between athletes’ perceptions of their coaches’ views of the quality of their coach-athlete relationship (i.e., an athlete’s meta-perception) and athletes’ self-presentational concerns related to their coach. 119 athletes completed a modified version of the Self-Presentation in Sport Questionnaire (Wilson & Eklund, 1998) and the meta-version of the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (Jowett, 2009). All self-presentational concerns were negatively associated with increased perceptions of closeness and positively associated with increased perceptions of commitment. Athletes appear to perceive their coach as a potential source of self-presentational concern and that these concerns are associated with inferences about their coaches’ perception of the quality of that relationship. This suggests that a coach needs to be aware that how an athlete perceives the coach’s perception of the quality of the relationship can potentially impact on the concerns experienced by that athlete.

      • The interdependence of coaches’ and athletes’ perceptions and satisfaction with performance

Ross Lorimer 한국코칭능력개발원 2011 International Journal of Coaching Science Vol.5 No.2

This study investigated the interdependence of coaches’ and athletes’ perceptions of the athletes’ performance and their association with coaches’ and athletes’ satisfaction with the athletes’ performance. One-hundred coach-athlete dyads completed the performance subscale of the Athlete Satisfaction Questionnaire (Riemer & Chelladurai, 1998) and the performance subscale of the Elite Athlete Self-Description Questionnaire (Marsh, Hey, Johnson, & Perry, 1997). The results of a structural equation model analysis indicated a level of interdependence between the paired coach and athlete variables. There was a significant association between individual’s own perceptions of performance and satisfaction with performance. Additionally, coaches’ perceptions of performance were significantly associated with athletes’ satisfaction with performance, whereas athletes’ perceptions of performance were not associated with coaches’ satisfaction with performance. These results are discussed based on issues they raise for theory and practice.

      • Are coach education programmes the most effective method for coach development?

Jordan Maclean,Ross Lorimer 한국코칭능력개발원 2016 International Journal of Coaching Science Vol.10 No.2

The purpose of this study is to establish whether coaches from a multi-sport context develop most effectively through coach education programmes and whether formal learning is fostering coach effectiveness. A sample of eight qualified male multi-sports’ coaches participated with an age range of 24 to 52 years (M = 32.6, ± = 8.9) and 9 to 18 years coaching experience (M = 12.6, ± = 3.8). Qualitative semi structured interviews were employed, lasting approximately 30 to 60 minutes. The data then underwent a thematic analysis process reducing the data into six overarching themes: values of the coach; the coach’s role on athlete development; forms of learning; barriers regarding coach education; role of governing bodies; coaches career pathway. The findings of the study indicated coaches access a wide range of sources to enhance their practice, but informal learning was preferred (interacting with other coaches and learning by doing). This resulted from numerous barriers experienced surrounding the delivery, cost and access to coach education programmes preventing coaches from progressing through the pathway. However, coaches in the study feel coach education should be a mandatory process for every coach. The findings have implications for policymakers and sport organisations in developing their coach education structure.
