Association between the empirical dietary inflammatory index and musculoskeletal pain in community-dwelling older adults: a cross-sectional study

        Mahshid Rezaei,Zahra Tajary,Zahra Esmaeily,Atefeh Eyvazkhani,Shahrzad Daei,Marjan Mansouri Dara,Mohaddeseh Rezaei,Abolghassem Djazayeri,Ahmadreza Dorosty Motlagh 질병관리본부 2023 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.14 No.1

Objectives: Inflammation has been proposed to be one of the main causes of musculoskeletal pain. Diet is a lifestyle factor that plays an important role in managing inflammation; thus, we assessed the inflammatory potential of diets using the empirical dietary inflammatory index (EDII) to investigate the relationship between diet and musculoskeletal pain. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 212 elderly individuals who were selected from health centers in Tehran, Iran. Dietary intake was evaluated using a valid and reliable 147-item food frequency questionnaire. To measure the intensity of pain, a visual analogue scale was used. Multiple linear regression was applied to assess the association between the EDII and musculoskeletal pain. Results: In total, 62.7% and 37.3% of participants had mild and severe pain, respectively. The EDII values were 0.97±0.72 and 1.10±0.66, respectively, in those with mild and severe pain. A higher EDII score was associated with more intense musculoskeletal pain after adjusting for age and sex (β=0.20; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.06–0.26; p<0.001), but not after adjustment for other confounders (β=–0.13; 95% CI, –1.54 to 0.60; p=0.39). Conclusion: Our findings indicated that higher dietary inflammation might not be associated with musculoskeletal pain in older adults. However, further investigations are required to confirm these findings.

Solvent and Solvent to Sample Ratio as Main Parameters in the Microwave-assisted Extraction of Polyphenolic Compounds from Apple Pomace

        Sahar Rezaei,Karamatollah Rezaei,Maryam Haghighi,Mohsen Labbafi 한국식품과학회 2013 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.22 No.5

Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) in the presence of ethanol and water as solvents was applied as a modern technique to extract polyphenolic compounds from apple pomace and the results were compared to those of Soxhlet extraction and maceration. Various experimental conditions such as microwave power, extraction time, type of solvent, and solvent to sample ratio were considered for the study. Increasing microwave power (from 90 to 360 W)resulted in lower extraction yields. Ethanol-water (at the ratio of 65 to 35) was the best solvent for MAE. However, for the sake of higher water contribution in the extraction,a ratio of 35:65 (ethanol:water) can be selected for a recovery of -90% at a shorter extraction time. The best solvent to sample ratio was found at 20 to 1 level. When used for the extraction of polyphenolic compounds from apple pomace, MAE was faster than maceration and Soxhlet methods.

COMPOSITION OPERATORS ON 𝓠K-TYPE SPACES AND A NEW COMPACTNESS CRITERION FOR COMPOSITION OPERATORS ON 𝓠s SPACES

Rezaei, Shayesteh Korean Mathematical Society 2017 대한수학회논문집 Vol.32 No.1

For -2 < ${\alpha}$ < ${\infty}$ and 0 < p < ${\infty}$, the $\mathcal{Q}_K$-type space is the space of all analytic functions on the open unit disk ${\mathbb{D}}$ satisfying $$_{{\sup} \atop a{\in}{\mathbb{D}}}{\large \int_{\mathbb{D}}}{{\mid}f^{\prime}(z){\mid}}^p(1-{{\mid}z{\mid}^2})^{\alpha}K(g(z,a))dA(z)<{\infty}$$, where $g(z,a)=log\frac{1}{{\mid}{\sigma}_a(z){\mid}}$ is the Green's function on ${\mathbb{D}}$ and K : [0, ${\infty}$) [0, ${\infty}$), is a right-continuous and non-decreasing function. For 0 < s < ${\infty}$, the space $\mathcal{Q}_s$ consists of all analytic functions on ${\mathbb{D}}$ for which $$_{sup \atop a{\in}{\mathbb{D}}}{\large \int_{\mathbb{D}}}{{\mid}f^{\prime}(z){\mid}}^2(g(z,a))^sdA(z)<{\infty}$$. Boundedness and compactness of composition operators $C_{\varphi}$ acting on $\mathcal{Q}_K$-type spaces and $\mathcal{Q}_s$ spaces is characterized in terms of the norms of ${\varphi}^n$. Thus the author announces a solution to the problem raised by Wulan, Zheng and Zhou.

CONSTRUCTION OF Γ-ALGEBRA AND Γ-LIE ADMISSIBLE ALGEBRAS

        Rezaei, A.H.,Davvaz, Bijan The Kangwon-Kyungki Mathematical Society 2018 한국수학논문집 Vol.26 No.2

In this paper, at first we generalize the notion of algebra over a field. A ${\Gamma}$-algebra is an algebraic structure consisting of a vector space V, a groupoid ${\Gamma}$ together with a map from $V{\times}{\Gamma}{\times}V$ to V. Then, on every associative ${\Gamma}$-algebra V and for every ${\alpha}{{\in}}{\Gamma}$ we construct an ${\alpha}$-Lie algebra. Also, we discuss some properties about ${\Gamma}$-Lie algebras when V and ${\Gamma}$ are the sets of $m{\times}n$ and $n{\times}m$ matrices over a field F respectively. Finally, we define the notions of ${\alpha}$-derivation, ${\alpha}$-representation, ${\alpha}$-nilpotency and prove Engel theorem in this case.

Electrochemical Behavior of Nanostructured Fe-Pd Alloy During Electrodeposition on Different Substrates

Rezaei, Milad,Haghshenas, Davoud F.,Ghorbani, Mohammad,Dolati, Abolghasem The Korean Electrochemical Society 2018 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.9 No.3

In this work, Fe-Pd alloy films have been electrodeposited on different substrates using an electrolyte containing $[Pd(NH_3)_4]^{2+}$ (0.02 M) and $[Fe-Citrate]^{2+}$ (0.2 M). The influences of substrate and overpotential on chemical composition, nucleation and growth kinetics as well as the electrodeposited films morphology have been investigated using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), current-time transients, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. In all substrates - brass, copper and sputtered fluorine doped tin oxide on glass (FTO/glass) - Fe content of the electrodeposited alloys increases by increasing the overpotential. Also the cathodic current efficiency is low due to high rate of $H_2$ co-reduction. Regarding the chronoamperometry current-time transients, it has been demonstrated that the nucleation mechanism is instantaneous with a typical three dimensional (3D) diffusion-controlled growth in the case of brass and copper substrates; while for FTO, the growth mode changes to 3D progressive. At a constant overpotential, the calculated number of active nucleation sites for metallic substrates is much higher than that of FTO/glass; however by increasing the overpotential, the number of active nucleation sites increases. The SEM micrographs as well as the XRD patterns reveal the formation of Fe-Pd alloy thin films with nanostructure arrangement and ultra-fine grains.

The effects of Commiphora mukul extract on spermatogenesis and testosterone levels in male diabetic rats

Rezaei, Ali Akbar,Salehi, Iraj,Karimi, Seyed Asaad,Rahnama, Mehdi The Korean Society for Reproductive Medicine 2020 Clinical and Experimental Reproductive Medicine Vol.47 No.1

Objective: The strong antioxidant activity of Commiphora mukul prompted us to conduct the present study to explore whether treatment with C. mukul extract (CME) would have any protective influence on sperm parameters, testosterone levels, and plasma glucose levels in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Methods: Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: control, control animals treated with CME, diabetic animals, and diabetic animals treated with CME. CME extract (300 mg/kg) was administered for 60 days by daily gavage. Diabetes was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of 50 mg/kg STZ. The epididymal sperm count, weight, motility, morphology, viability, and serum testosterone and glucose levels were determined. Results: In the diabetic animals, CME decreased blood glucose levels (p< 0.05), increased the total sperm count (p< 0.05), and decreased the proportion of sperm with abnormal morphology (p< 0.05). Diabetes reduced sperm motility (p< 0.001), and CME supplementation partially reversed this effect of diabetes (p= 0.003). Furthermore, in diabetic animals, CME decreased the proportion of immotile sperm (p< 0.001). In rats, diabetes caused a significant decrease (p< 0.05) in serum testosterone levels (F[3, 28] = 3.283, p= 0.035), but treatment of diabetic animals with CME increased serum testosterone levels. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that C. mukul possesses proandrogenic activity and exerts a beneficial effect on sperm parameters in diabetic rats.

Letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor, improves seminal parameters and hormonal profile in aged endangered Markhoz bucks

Rezaei, Ako,Vaziry, Asaad,Farshad, Abbas Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2022 Animal Bioscience Vol.35 No.11

Objective: Letrozole, a potent aromatase inhibitor, is known to have the potential to modify male reproductive function by altering sex hormone levels. This study aimed to evaluate the semen and testicular characteristics and hormonal profile of aged Mrakhoz bucks (Capra hircus) treated with letrozole. Methods: Twelve Markhoz male goats, aged between 4.5 to 5.5 years with an average body weight (BW) of 61.05±4.97 kg were used for the study. Animals were randomly divided into two equal groups and subcutaneously received either 0.25 mg/kg BW of letrozole or a control every week for 2 months. The semen collections were performed every 10 days, and blood samples and testicular biometric records were collected at 20 days intervals. Results: Letrozole causes increased testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone levels, testosterone to estradiol ratio, semen index and reaction time during the period from 20th to 60th days (p<0.05). Furthermore, letrozole-treated bucks had higher semen volume, sperm concentration, and total sperm per ejaculate from 30th to 60th days (p<0.05). However, no differences occurred between the groups in scrotal circumference, relative testicular volume, semen pH, abnormality, acrosome integrity, and membrane integrity of sperm during the study (p>0.05). The serum luteinizing hormone levels, sperm viability, motility, and progressive motility increased, and estradiol levels decreased after 40th to 60th days of letrozole treatment (p<0.05). Conclusion: Letrozole application to aged Markhoz bucks provokes reproductive hormonal axis which, in turn, induces enhancement of semen production and quality.

Grid-Connected Photovoltaic System Based on a Cascaded H-Bridge Inverter

Rezaei, Mohammad-Ali,Iman-Eini, Hossein,Farhangi, Shahrokh The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2012 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.12 No.4

In this paper a single-phase Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) inverter for photovoltaic (PV) applications is presented. Based on the presented mathematical analysis, a novel controller is introduced which adjusts the inverter power factor (PF) and manipulates the distribution of the reactive power between the cells to enhance the operating range of the CHB inverter. The adopted control strategy enables tracking of the maximum power point (MPP) of distinct PV strings and allows independent control of the dc-link voltages. The proposed controller also enables the inverter to operate under heavily unbalanced PV conditions. The performance of the CHB inverter and the proposed controllers are evaluated in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment. A seven-level CHB-based grid connected laboratory prototype is also utilized to verify the system performance.

Measuring and Decomposing Socioeconomic Inequality in Catastrophic Healthcare Expenditures in Iran

Rezaei, Satar,Hajizadeh, Mohammad The Korean Society for Preventive Medicine 2019 예방의학회지 Vol.52 No.4

Objectives: Equity in financial protection against healthcare expenditures is one the primary functions of health systems worldwide. This study aimed to quantify socioeconomic inequality in facing catastrophic healthcare expenditures (CHE) and to identify the main factors contributing to socioeconomic inequality in CHE in Iran. Methods: A total of 37 860 households were drawn from the Households Income and Expenditure Survey, conducted by the Statistical Center of Iran in 2017. The prevalence of CHE was measured using a cut-off of spending at least 40% of the capacity to pay on healthcare services. The concentration curve and concentration index (C) were used to illustrate and measure the extent of socioeconomic inequality in CHE among Iranian households. The C was decomposed to identify the main factors explaining the observed socioeconomic inequality in CHE in Iran. Results: The prevalence of CHE among Iranian households in 2017 was 5.26% (95% confidence interval [CI], 5.04 to 5.49). The value of C was -0.17 (95% CI, -0.19 to -0.13), suggesting that CHE was mainly concentrated among socioeconomically disadvantaged households in Iran. The decomposition analysis highlighted the household wealth index as explaining 71.7% of the concentration of CHE among the poor in Iran. Conclusions: This study revealed that CHE is disproportionately concentrated among poor households in Iran. Health policies to reduce socioeconomic inequality in facing CHE in Iran should focus on socioeconomically disadvantaged households.
