        Fourth Ventricular Lesions in Metastatic Gliomas: A Rare Predilection?

        Over the course of five years, a total of ten cases were collected of glioma patients in whom a distant lesion at the fourth ventricle was noted. A `distant lesion` was defined as a lesion with a normal appearing tissue bridge at imaging between the primary and secondary locations. Previous imaging of these patients was reviewed along with clinical history, course of therapy, and available histology. A review of the literature was performed with respect to present knowledge on patterns of glioma proliferation and dissemination. This case series is the first to describe the fourth ventricle as a location that may be prone to secondary lesions in glioma patients. Further investigation on this subject may yield deeper insights into the mechanisms by which glial tumors spread within the brain, with the hope of developing or improving therapeutic targets.

        A Population Health Surveillance Theory

        OBJECTIVES: Despite its extensive use, the term ¨Surveillance¨ often takes on various meanings in the scientific literature pertinent to public health and animal health. A critical appraisal of this literature also reveals ambiguities relating to the scope and necessary structural components underpinning the surveillance process. The authors hypothesized that these inconsistencies translate to real or perceived deficiencies in the conceptual framework of population health surveillance. This paper presents a population health surveillance theory framed upon an explicit conceptual system relative to health surveillance performed in human and animal populations. METHODS: The population health surveillance theory reflects the authors’ system of thinking and was based on a creative process. RESULTS: Population health surveillance includes two broad components: one relating to the human organization(which includes expertise and the administrative program), and one relating to the system per se (which includes elements of design and method) and which can be viewed as a process. The population health surveillance process is made of five sequential interrelated steps: 1) a trigger or need, 2) problem formulation, 3) surveillance planning, 4) surveillance implementation, and 5) information communication and audit. CONCLUSIONS: The population health surveillance theory provides a systematic way of understanding, organizing and evaluating the population health surveillance process.

      • Mechanism of B-Cell Receptor-Induced Phosphorylation and Activation of Phospholipase C-γ2

        <B>ABSTRACT</B><P>Phospholipase C-γ2 (PLC-γ2) plays an important role in B-cell signaling. Phosphorylation of various tyrosine residues of PLC-γ2 has been implicated in regulation of its lipase activity. With the use of antibodies specific for each of the putative phosphorylation sites, we have now shown that PLC-γ2 is phosphorylated on Y753, Y759, and Y1217 in response to engagement of the B-cell receptor in Ramos cells, as well as in murine splenic B cells. In cells stimulated maximally via this receptor, the extent of phosphorylation of Y1217 was three times that of Y753 or of Y759. Stimulation of Jurkat T cells or platelets via their immunoreceptors also elicited phosphorylation of Y753 and Y759 but not that of Y1217. A basal level of phosphorylation of Y753 was apparent in unstimulated lymphocytes. The extent of phosphorylation of Y753 and Y759, but not that of Y1217, correlated with the lipase activity of PLC-γ2. Examination of the effects of various pharmacological inhibitors and of RNA interference in Ramos cells suggested that Btk is largely, but not completely, responsible for phosphorylation of Y753 and Y759, whereas phosphorylation of Y1217 is independent of Btk. Finally, phosphorylation of Y1217 and that of Y753 and Y759 occurred on different PLC-γ2 molecules.</P>
