      • Gesture Recognition Based on Hexagonal Structure Histograms of Oriented Gradients

        Feature extraction methods of image directly affect the feature recognition results based on computer vision-based gesture recognition. This paper proposed a gesture feature extraction method of hexagonal structure, which is based on histograms of oriented gradients. This paper transforms the quadrilateral structure into hexagonal structure of the image and defines hexagonal block structure. Using different structures, different sizes of hexagonal blocks extract gesture feature and recognize on different sizes image. Experimental results show that hexagonal structure block is more appropriate than conventional histograms of oriented gradients structure block, the hexagonal structure histograms of oriented gradients feature extraction method is more efficient than the square and circular structure histograms of oriented gradients feature, using gentle_adaboost classifier achieved higher recognition rate.

      • Large-Scale Image Retrieval with Bag-of-Words and k-NN Re-Ranking

        Image retrieval methods have been significantly developed in the last decade. The BOW (Bag-of-words) model lacks spatial information. Some methods stem from BOW approach which is recently extended to a vector aggregation model. Most of them are either too strict or too loose so that they are only effective in limited cases. In this study, we present a novel feature extraction method for image retrieval. We acquire the gradients features from the p.d.f (Probability density function) because of essentially representing the image. We construct the features by the histogram of the oriented p.d.f gradients via aggregation of the orientation codes. Then, we adopt the PCA (Principal component analysis) method to reduce the dimensionality of BOW. Furthermore, we introduce a novel and robust re-ranking method with the k-nearest neighbors. We estimate our method using various datasets. In the experiments on scene retrieval, the proposed method is efficient, and exhibits superior performances compared to the other existing methods.

        A high-resolution timescale for the Miocene Shanwang diatomaceous shale lagerstätte (China): development of Wavelet Scale Series Analysis for cyclostratigraphy

        The Miocene aged Shanwang Formation from the Shanwang National Geopark in China represents a succession of lacustrine diatomaceous shales containing an abundant and diverse biota with lagerstätte fossilization of soft tissues. To date, the Shanwang Formation has not been investigated for cyclostratigraphy nor has it been dated with high precision methods. Now we use thorium data as a paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic proxy to conduct a detailed cyclostratigraphic analysis. A new and simple cyclostratigraphic method, Wavelet Scale Series Analysis (WSSA) is developed to recognize Milankovitch cycles. A total of three short eccentricity and fifteen precession cycles are identified; obliquity cycles are not apparent. In the sedimentary succession, the corresponding precession and short eccentricity cycles are 1.17 m and 4.98 m thick respectively, with this verified by Correlation Coefficient (COCO) analysis and Multitaper-Method (MTM) spectral analysis. We estimate the studied interval was deposited over a duration of 0.3 Myr with a depositional rate of c. 5.7 cm/kyr. Paleomagnetic and radio isotope dating data shows that the diatomaceous shale was deposited during Chron C5En, which places it at approximately 18.5 Ma during the Burdigalian stage of the Early Miocene, rather than in the Middle Miocene as previously thought. The Shanwang lagerstätte biota therefore predates the Middle Miocene Climate Optimum (MMCO) and did not form within it. The geological time scale with a high resolution of 20 kyr was set accordingly.

        A Study on Aero-Engine Direct Thrust Control with Nonlinear Model Predictive Control Based on Deep Neural Network

        For enhancing engine response ability, a novel nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) method for aero-engine direct thrust control is proposed. The control objective of the proposed method is the thrust instead of the measurable parameters. The online-sliding window deep neural network (OL-SW-DNN) is proposed as predictive model. The OL-SW-DNN adopts deep-learning structure to increase the model accuracy and selects the nearest point data of certain length as training data which will reduce the sensitivity for the noise of training data. The direct thrust simulations of the popular NMPC based on extended Kalman filler (EKF) and the proposed one are conducted, respectively. The simulations demonstrate that compared with the popular NMPC, the proposed NMPC decreases the acceleration time by 0.425 s and increases response speed about 1.14 times.

        Novel copolymers with intrinsic microporosity containing tetraphenyl-bipyrimidine for enhanced gas separation

        The gas separation of polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) was enhanced by incorporatingbipyrimidine (bpy) into the polymer (PIM-bpy-x) through the polycondensation of a novel tetraphenyl-bipyrimidine monomer. The structures of PIM-bpy-x were investigated with 1H NMR and FT-IR. Becauseof the excellent heat resistance imparted by the tetraphenyl-bipyrimidine unit, PIM-bpy-x displayedbetter thermal stability than did PIM-1. These polymers displayed large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)surface areas, ranging from 656 to 728 m2 g 1. The BET surface area of PIM-bpy-5 was 728 m2 g 1, whichwas similar to that of PIM-1 (774 m2 g 1). PIM-bpy-x exhibited excellent gas separation performance. PIM-bpy-5 showed the highest CO2 permeability (5141 barrer), which was much higher than that of PIM-1 (4234 barrer). The increase in CO2 permeability is due to the affinity between the N-rich bipyrimidineunits and CO2. Furthermore, PIM-bpy-x also showed greater resistance to aging than did PIM-1. All of theabove indicate that introducing bipyrimidine units into the polymers can enhance the gas separationperformance of PIMs.
