Optimization of diesel biodegradation by Vibrio alginolyticus using Box-Behnken design

Muhammad Fauzul Imron,Harmin Sulistiyaning Titah 대한환경공학회 2018 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.23 No.4

Petroleum hydrocarbons pollutants, such as diesel fuel, have caused ecosystem damage in terrestrial and aquatic habitats. They have been recognized as one of the most hazardous wastes. This study was designed to optimize the effect of Tween 80 concentration, nitrogen (N)/phosphorus (P) ratio and salinity level on diesel biodegradation by Vibrio alginolyticus (V. alginolyticus). Response surface methodology with Box-Behnken design was selected with three factors of Tween 80 concentration (0, 5, 10 ㎎/L), N/P ratio (5, 10, 15) and salinity level (15‰, 17.5‰, 20‰) as independent variables. The percentage of diesel degradation was a dependent variable for 14 d of the remediation period. The results showed that the percentages of diesel degradation generally increased with an increase in the amount of Tween 80 concentration, N/P ratio and salinity level, respectively. The optimization condition for diesel degradation by V. alginolyticus occurred at 9.33 ㎎/L of Tween 80, 9.04 of N/P ratio and 19.47‰ of salinity level, respectively, with percentages of diesel degradation at 98.20%. The statistical analyses of the experimental results and model predictions (R² = 0.9936) showed the reliability of the regression model and indicated that the addition of biostimulant can enhance the percentage of diesel biodegradation.

Static and transient analyses of Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400) initial core using open-source nodal core simulator KOMODO

        Jwaher Alnaqbi,Donny Hartanto,Reem Alnuaimi,Muhammad Imron,Victor Gillette 한국원자력학회 2022 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.54 No.2

The United Arab Emirates is currently building and operating four units of the APR-1400 developed by aSouth Korean vendor, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). This paper attempts to perform APR1400 reactor core analysis by using the well-known two-step method. The two-step method wasapplied to the APR-1400 first cycle using the open-source nodal diffusion code, KOMODO. In this study, the group constants were generated using CASMO-4 fuel transport lattice code. The simulation wasperformed in Hot Zero Power (HZP) at steady-state and transient conditions. Some typical parametersnecessary for the Nuclear Design Report (NDR) were evaluated in this paper, such as effective neutronmultiplication factor, control rod worth, and critical boron concentration for steady-state analysis. Otherparameters such as reactivity insertion, power, and fuel temperature changes during the ReactivityInsertion Accident (RIA) simulation were evaluated as well. The results from KOMODO were verifiedusing PARCS and SIMULATE-3 nodal core simulators. It was found that KOMODO gives an excellentagreement

Trade in a small-range songbird, the Javan crocias, gives insight into the Asian Songbird Crisis

        Vincent Nijman,Ahmad Ardiansyah,Rifqi Hendrik,Abdullah Langgeng,Sophie Manson,Katey Hedger,Muhammad Ali Imron,K. Anne-Isola Nekaris 국립중앙과학관 2021 Journal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity Vol.14 No.2

The Asian Songbird Crisisdthe recognition that the cage bird trade is the number one threat to manysongbirdsdhas focussed on either individual bird markets or specific taxa. We here show, throughsustained monitoring, that even species that were not thought to be traded are also at risk from overexploitation. The Javan crocias Laniellus albonotatus is endemic to the montane forests of western Javaethis remoteness was thought to be the reason why it had escaped from being at risk. We surveyed21 bird markets over a 44-month period; the number of crocias recorded in markets (1.29 birds/survey)was negatively related to the distance to its habitat. The size of the bird market had no effect on thenumber of crocias we recorded. Prices (US$26.70/bird), when corrected for inflation, did not change over12 years suggesting supply can keep up with demand. Turnover is high (50% sold after 8 days), and weestimate the total trade at 1,200 to 1,500 birds/year. Legal protection of Javan crocias seen in isolationthus far is proven to be ineffective. A more inclusive approach where government bodies, conservationagencies and society participate, is needed to curb the trade in this and other imperiled songbirds.
