Effectiveness of massage and range of motion exercises on muscle strength and intensive care unit-acquired weakness in Iranian patients with COVID-19: a randomized parallel-controlled trial

Mohammad Ali Zakeri,Adnan Rashid Aziz,Elham Rahiminezhad,Mahlagha Dehghan 대한중환자의학회 2024 Acute and Critical Care Vol.39 No.1

Background: Muscle weakness is prevalent in intensive care patients. This study focused on comparing the effects of massage and range of motion (ROM) exercises on muscle strength and intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICU-AW) among patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods: This study was a randomized clinical trial that recruited patients (n=45) with COVID-19 admitted to the ICU and divided them into three groups (ROM exercises, massage, and control). We evaluated muscle strength and ICU-AW in the arms and legs using a hand dynamometer. The Medical Research Council sum score was determined before and after the intervention. Results: The study findings were that 0%, 20%, and 100% of the participants in the ROM exercises, massage, and control groups had ICU-AW on the 7th day of ICU admission. The ROM exercise group had greater muscle strength in the hands and legs than the massage and control groups, and the massage group had greater muscle strength than the control group. Conclusions: Massage and ROM exercises could improve muscle strength and reduce ICU-AW in COVID-19 patients admitted to the ICU.

Influence of unsupported and partially supported sleepers on dynamic responses of train–track interaction

Jabbar Ali Zakeri,Morvarid Fattahi,Mohammad Mehdi Ghanimoghadam 대한기계학회 2015 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.29 No.6

One of the major problems of railroad deterioration is uneven settlement which occurs due to various reasons, including existence ofdefects in substructures, using non-homogenous ballast, or being poorly drained. Sometimes, because of these problems, sleepers remainfreely as a part of vertical displacement and contact the ballast with load increase. Different models have been presented for checking theeffect of hanging sleepers on the dynamic interaction of rail and train. In this paper, a mathematical model was developed for railwaytrack and differential rail displacement with supported and unsupported sleepers was compared by modeling sleepers such as partiallysupported ones. On this basis, the motion equations of the train-track system were solved considering the non-linearity of wheel/rail contactform and using numerical integration in the time domain. Longitudinal sections of the track model were coded in Matlab softwareand the effect of one, two, or three partially supported sleepers and various spacing of sleepers on the sleepers and rail displacement wasstudied and compared with that of the unsupported one. It was shown that, with increasing the sleeper spacing from 50 to 75 cm, raildisplacement increased from 7 to 22% in the unsupported sleeper and 5 to 8% in the partially supported sleeper. Additionally, rail displacementincreased from 13 to 74% by changing the number of the unsupported sleeper from 1 to 9. Also, it increased from 6 to 24% inthe partially supported sleepers.

The Relationship between Coronavirus Anxiety, Mindfulness and Spiritual Health in Patients with Cancer: A Survey in Southeast Iran

        Mahlagha Dehghan,Zakieh Namjoo,Ahmad Zarei,Hanieh Tajedini,Amir Bahrami,Mohammad Ali Zakeri 대한신경정신의학회 2021 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.18 No.5

Objective The sudden outbreak of COVID-19 has caused major health problems, including anxiety in cancer patients worldwide. Spiritual health and mindfulness are considered as factors affecting anxiety. This study addressed the relationship between COVID-19 anxiety, spiritual health and mindfulness in patients with cancer. Methods One hundred and eighty-four cancer patients participated in this cross-sectional study. The data were collected with convenience sampling method from two oncology centers from 15 June to 15 July 2020 in the southeast Iran. Patients completed the Demographic and Clinical Characteristics Form, Corona Disease Anxiety Scale (CDAS), The Freiburg Mindfulness inventory-Short Form (FMI-SF) and Spiritual Health Scale. Results According to the psychological symptom subscale (CDAS), 61.4% of the participants had moderate to severe anxiety. According to the physical symptom subscale, 38% of the participants had moderate to severe anxiety. No significant association was found between corona disease anxiety and mindfulness/spiritual health (p>0.05).Conclusion The results of this study showed high levels of mental and physical anxiety and worries about COVID-19 disease in cancer patients, which led to challenges in their lives. It is necessary to review and implement effective interventions in future studies to prevent anxiety and its consequences in cancer patients.
