Comparative Study of Honey Samples Depicting the Difference in Important Nectar Yielding Plants after a Span of 15 Years in Bangalore, Karnataka, India

Mary Scinthia James Devan 한국양봉학회 2011 韓國養蜂學會誌 Vol.26 No.1

Bangalore was earlier famous for its pleasant climate, thanks to its lush green parks, gardens, trees lined avenues, vast expanses of agricultural and horticultural lands on the outskirts of the city and flowerings plants in bloom throughout the year which earned it the name “Garden City of India”. The city today bears little resemblance to the Bangalore city of yore. The climate of Bangalore has become hotter due to indiscriminate felling of trees for Namma metro rail project which is coming up throughout the major centers of the city. Extension of city limits and widening of roads which is on going has also drastically reduced the greenery. This investigation was taken up to study the difference in the important nectar yielding plants after a span of 15 years between 1992 and 2007. The major nectar sources recorded in the year 1992 was compared with the major nectar yielding plants of the year 2007. Of the 131 pollen morphotypes recorded in the honey samples of 1992, only 103 pollen morphotypes were recorded in the honey samples collected in the year 2007, twenty eight pollen morphotypes were not found. The above investigations reveals the loss of nectar yielding plants, which has affected the honey bee colonies, the vegetation and the Bio-diversity of the area.
