스트리돈의 히에로니무스(기원후 약 347-420년)는 오리게네스에 이어 고대 그리스도교에서 성경 원어인 그리스어와 히브리어 공부에 깊이 매진한 몇 안 되는 학자들 가운데 한 사람이다. 그가 멋진 스타일의 라틴어로 번역한 성경인 불가타본은 서구 그리스도교 세계에서 천 년 가까이 표본으로 받아들여졌다. 문학과 언어에 대한 깊은 연구 이외에도, 히에로니무스가 성서학자로서 남긴 기념비적인 업적은 수도적 열정, 그리스도교와 유다교 출신의 다양한 주석학자들의 가르침, 성서지리학적 지식, 그리고 지중해 연안 지역을 아우르는 학계 네트워크에 근거하였다. Jerome of Stridon (ca. 347-420 CE) was, after Origen, one of few Christian scholars of antiquity who was engaged in profound studies of the biblical languages Greek and Hebrew. His stylistically accomplished Latin translation was received as the standard Bible of Western Christianity for a millennium -the Vulgate. Besides his intense studies of literature and languages, Jerome’s monumental achievement as a biblical scholar was grounded in monastic enthusiasm, the teaching of a wide range of exegetes of Christian and Jewish provenance, knowledge of biblical geography, and an academic network that spanned the Mediterranean basin.

This article relates the theory of cultural memory, with special reference to the work of Jan and Aleida Assmann, to the sacramental rituals. In particular, it emphasizes the entanglement of sacred texts with rites that make the transmission of cultural memory especially effective. By analysing the institutions of the Passover in Exodus 12 and the Eucharist in the New Testament, especially in 1 Corinthians 11 and Luke 22, the article demonstrates several common linguistic features as prerequisites for actualizing performance. The narrative settings of the institutions in Exodus and in the Passion of Jesus show that both the Passover and the Eucharist convey the memory of cultural trauma and its resilient transformation. Both rituals have accompanied Judaism and Christianity as migratory companions through history.

<P>The paper presents a new sample clean-up method based on immuno-ultrafiltration for the analysis of ochratoxin A in cereals. In contrast to immunoaffinity chromatography, in immuno-ultrafiltration, the antibodies are used in non-immobilised form. Ochratoxin A was extracted with ACN/water (60/40, v/v), and the extract was loaded onto the ultrafiltration device. After a washing step with phosphate-buffered saline, containing 0.05% Tween 20, ochratoxin A was eluted with MeOH/acetic acid (99/1, v/v). The detection of ochratoxin A was carried out with high-performance liquid chromatography and a fluorescence detector coupled to an electrochemical cell (Coring cell). The electrochemical cell was used to eliminate matrix interferences by oxidising matrix compounds. The method was validated by repeatedly analysing spiked barley and rye samples as well as a certified wheat reference material. Recoveries and standard deviations (1 SD) were found to be 71??9%, 77??12% and 77??8% in wheat, barley and rye, respectively. The limit of detection (S/N?=?3) and limit of quantitation (S/N?=?10) were determined to be 0.4 μg kg(-1) and 1 μg kg(-1). The analysis of the certified reference material resulted in ochratoxin A concentrations which were in the range assigned by the producer. Additionally, the effect of the electrochemical cell on other widely used clean-up techniques, namely the immunoaffinity clean-up and multifunctional columns (Mycosep #229), was evaluated. In all clean-up methods, an improvement of the chromatogram quality was registered.</P>

Cost-Based Predictive Spatiotemporal Join

<P>A predictive spatiotemporal join finds all pairs of moving objects satisfying a join condition on future time and space. In this paper, we present CoPST, the first and foremost algorithm for such a join using two spatiotemporal indexes. In a predictive spatiotemporal join, the bounding boxes of the outer index are used to perform window searches on the inner index, and these bounding boxes enclose objects with increasing laxity over time. CoPST constructs globally tightened bounding boxes 'on the fly' to perform window searches during join processing, thus significantly minimizing overlap and improving the join performance. CoPST adapts gracefully to large-scale databases, by dynamically switching between main-memory buffering and disk-based buffering, through a novel probabilistic cost model. Our extensive experiments validate the cost model and show its accuracy for realistic data sets. We also showcase the superiority of CoPST over algorithms adapted from state-of-the-art spatial join algorithms, by a speedup of up to an order of magnitude.</P>
