Extending Fatigue Life of Out-of-plane Gusset Joint by Bonding CFRP Plates Under Bending Moment

Carbon fiber reinforced plastic, CFRP, plates bonding method is one of the new repair methods for fatigue cracks. In this method, propagation of fatigue crack will be delay because of the suppression of crack opening by crack bridging and stress reduction by composite effect of bonding CFRP plates. In this study, to clarify the effect of bonding CFRP plates on fatigue life extension, bending fatigue tests were carried out. First, fatigue tests on the specimens in as-welded condition were conducted until fatigue crack propagated to 10mm away from the weld toe. Then, fatigue crack was covered by CFRP plates and the specimens were re-tested until fatigue crack penetrated through the base plate. As the results of bending fatigue tests, the fatigue test data of the specimens repaired by bonding CFRP plates showed much longer fatigue life compared with that in as-welded condition, under stress ratio, R=0 and -infinity.

Objectives. Endoscopic laryngopharyngeal surgery (ELPS) is a minimally invasive transoral surgery that was developed to treat superficial larygo-pharyngeal cancer, in which a mucosal lesion is resected transorally while preserving deeper structures by subepithelial injection. The purpose of this retrospective study is to evaluate voice outcome in patients who underwent ELPS for superficial hypopharyngeal cancer. As important structures in producing voice, such as intrinsic laryngeal muscles, their fascia, and recurrent laryngeal nerve, are located in the medial side of the piriform sinus and the postcricoid region of the hypopharynx, we focused on patients with cancer lesions involving these regions. Methods. From April 2010 to March 2011, 25 consecutive patients with superficial laryngopharyngeal cancer were treated with ELPS at Kyoto University Hospital. Among the 25 patients, 11 patients with cancer lesions on the medial side of the piriform sinus or the postcricoid area were studied. Preoperative and postoperative voice functions including maximum phonation time (MPT), mean flow rate (MFR), jitter, shimmer, soft phonation index (SPI), and noise-to-harmonic ratio (NHR), were compared retrospectively. Results. Five of 11 cancer lesions had submucosal invasion and no lesion had invaded the muscular layer pathologically. T stage was classified as Tis in 5 cases, T1 in 4 cases, and T2 in 2 cases. All lesions involved the medial side of the piriform sinus and 2 also involved the postcricoid area. Vocal fold movement was normal in all cases after the surgery. Average preoperative and postoperative values for MPT, MFR, jitter, shimmer, SPI, and NHR, were 22.7 seconds and 23.4 seconds, 165 mL/sec and 150 mL/sec, 1.53% and 1.77%, 3.82% and 5.17%, 35.5 and 36.6, and 0.13% and 0.14%, respectively. There was no statistical difference between preoperative and postoperative data for all values examined. Conclusion. ELPS is useful in preserving voice function in the treatment of superficial hypopharyngeal cancer. Preserving the deeper structures including intrinsic muscles and their fascia may be important for preserving voice function as long as the lesions are superficial.
Identification of a New Race and Development of DNA Markers Associated with Powdery Mildew in Melon

Powdery mildew disease caused by an obligatory parasitic fungus Podosphaera xanthii is a serious problem of melon (Cucumis melo L.) production worldwide. Severity of problem is further associated with emergence of new races over the years. In this study a new race of powdery mildew fungus was discovered from Ibaraki, Japan. The race was different from all other existing races of P. xanthii occurring in Japan. Phenotypic and genetic analysis established the new fungus type as a new race, N5. Ten melon lines were infected with a total of eight fungal races including the new N5 race and it was found that all melon lines had different disease reactions against the new race compared to other seven races. Only four melon genotypes were found resistant out of 42 commercial cultivars and lines were tested. Disease reactions of two sets of F2 populations and one set of backcross population revealed that two separate epistatic gene loci located in two different linkage groups (LG), LG II and LG XII, interact together for the resistant or susceptible reaction of melon lines. A total of six simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were found polymorphic in melon lines out of 16 tested in response to N5 race. Two different sets of F2 populations between resistant and susceptible melon lines were assessed with two polymorphic SSR markers located in two different groups, LG II and LG XII. SSR genotyping yielded 78% and 94% expected polymerase chain reaction fragments in favor of resistance or susceptibility of F2 populations of CM17187×PMR5 and PMR45×PMR5 of melon lines, respectively.
