Effect of Elastic and Link Interface on Fracture Parameters of Nanocomposites
Mahdiye Hamedi 한국섬유공학회 2022 Fibers and polymers Vol.23 No.12
In this paper, the effects of interface strength on fracture parameters and crack growth in nanocompositesreinforced with Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) are investigated. Numerical models of pure epoxy and a nanocompositeconsisting of 0.5 wt% CNT were created and analyzed. The effects of nanotube/matrix interaction on nanocomposite fractureproperties were investigated by changing the interface mechanism. Three different interface conditions consisting of perfectbonding, elastic interface, and link interface were modeled. In order to investigate crack growth in the nanocomposite morerealistically, numerical models were developed based on TEM images taken from nanocomposite samples. Fractureparameters and crack growth of the nanocomposite were investigated using finite element simulations. To validate ourmodels, the simulation results were compared with those found in the literature and good agreement was observed. Theresults show that the CNT/matrix interface strength has a significant effect on nanocomposite fracture toughness. Optimumfracture toughness is obtained if perfect bonding is established at the CNT/matrix interface.
