        Sb-Fe bimetallic non-aqueous phase desulfurizer for efficient absorption of hydrogen sulfide: A combined experimental and DFT study

        A non-aqueous phase (Sb/Fe/NMP) desulfurization system for the removal of hydrogen sulfide from naturalgas was constructed by introducing SbCl3 and FeCl3 in a specific ratio into N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). The desulfurizingagent and its sulfur product were characterized, and the absorption pattern of H2S by the system wasinvestigated by static desulfurization experiments. The results indicate that the desulfurizer’s sulfur capacity can reach16 g/L at room temperature and pressure, and that adding the optimum amount of water and appropriate temperatureincrease can assist to increase desulfurization efficiency. The system maintained a sulfur capacity level of more than90% of the initial sulfur capacity after five consecutive desulfurization-regeneration cycles. XRD and XPS spectrogramrevealed that the regenerated solid product was high purity sulfur. Sb3+ is a key component to ensure the effectiveabsorption of H2S. The presence of a moderate amount of Fe3+ can oxidize and absorb small amounts of H2S and promotethe oxidative regeneration of the system. In addition, we combined the obtained experimental data with densityflooding theory (DFT) theoretical calculations to show that the effective coordination of Sb(III) with HS in the NMPenvironment is the main reason for the effective absorption of H2S by the desulfurizer. NMP is not involved in thecoordination absorption process of hydrogen sulfide.

        A “New Social Class” or Old Friends? A Study of Private Entrepreneurs in the National People’s Congress of China

        In this research note, we introduce a new dataset on China’s national legislators. It provides descriptive information on one key parameter: the nature of the business owned by private entrepreneur deputies in China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) from 2003 to 2017. The dataset contains information on whether the deputy once worked as a government official, whether the deputy was a former top manager of a state-owned/collective enterprise, and whether his/her current company was a state-owned/collective enterprise before being privatized. We categorize deputies as “insiders” as long as they stratify one of the aforementioned backgrounds, whereas others as the “grassroots.” This dataset thus reveals two types of private entrepreneur deputies who are significantly different with regard to how they started their own businesses. These findings shed new light on the relationship between private entrepreneurs and the party-state in China.

        Characteristics and provenance of hazardous trace elements in soil from a typical agricultural region in eastern Anhui, China

        With the purpose of investigate the characteristics and provenances of the hazardous trace elements (HTEs) in a typical agricultural land in the undulating plain area of eastern Anhui province, China, a total of 1170 soil samples were collected. Six HTEs, including Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, and As, were determined. Statistical methods including box plot, Pears on correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and cluster analysis, were conducted to illustrate the provenances of HTEs. Results indicate that Cd and Hg were influenced by human activities (such as traffic transportation for Cd and Pb, and chemical pesticides for Hg). Cr, Ni, and As mainly originated from the parent materials (e.g., red detrital rocks, carbonate rocks, and late Pleistocene loess). Pb is of dual provenances of both human activity and parent material. In a word, regarding highly toxic HTEs, the soil in the study area is almost free from pollution, and only a small amount of soil samples contains slightly higher contents of As, Cd and Pb.
