HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) is still an extremely attractivepharmaceutical target for the identification of new inhibitorspossibly active on drug resistant strains. Medicinalplants are a rich source of chemical diversity and can be usedto identify novel scaffolds to be further developed by chemicalmodifications. We investigated the ability of the main lignansfrom Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill. fruits, commonlyused in Traditional Chinese Medicine, to affect HIV-1 RTfunctions. We purified 6 lignans from Schisandra chinensisfruits and assayed their effects on HIV-1 RT and viral replication. Among the S. chinensis fruit lignans, Schisandrin Band Deoxyschizandrin selectively inhibited the HIV-1 RTassociatedDNA polymerase activity. Structure activity relationshiprevealed the importance of cyclooctadiene ring substituentsfor efficacy. In addition, Schisandrin B was also ableto impair HIV-1 RT drug resistant mutants and the earlyphases of viral replication. We identified Schisandrin B andDeoxyschizandrin as new scaffold for the further developmentof novel HIV-1 RT inhibitors.

The problems of robust stabilization and adaptive robust controller design are considered for a class of uncertain neutral systems with time delays and nonlinear uncertainties. In this paper, Pade approximation is used to deal with input-delays, and the adaptation laws are proposed to estimate the norm of the unknown parameter uncertainties. Based on the improved Razumikhin-type theorem and the updated values, a class of delay-independent adaptive robust state feedback controllers is constructed to guarantee the uniform ultimate boundedness of uncertain neutral systems with input-delays and nonlinear uncertainties. Finally, the chemical two-stage dissolution tank is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Shedding vortices in cross flow are of much practical importance in the analysis of flow induced vibrations of a steam generator. However, studies of shedding vortex are still few in present, especially in shedding patterns and its influences on lift performances. In this paper, five basic shedding patterns were investigated by numerical simulations of a 2D unsteady flow around a bundle with 253 cylinders. The numerical results clearly demonstrated that flow in line is the most common pattern. On the hand, the other four shedding patterns, cross in line, cross near line near, cross near line far and cross far line near, appear randomly. Influences of shedding vortices on lift performances were concluded as lift enhancement, lift pit and lift lag. These numerical results can provide a basic knowledge of shedding vortices for cylinders and can precisely quantify their influences on unsteady lift performances.
