        Chiral Host. Attempted Synthesis Using McMurry Reaction as a Final Ring Closure Method

        Using the low valent titanium induced carbonyl-carbonyl coupling reaction, it was attempted to synthesize sterically hindered 17-membered cyclic chiral host 2. The semifinal dialdehyde 12 was obtained through 11 step reactions beginning from p-tert-butylphenol and dibenzofuran. When dialdehyde 12 was treated with $TiCl_3-Zn/Cu,$ only intermolecularly coupled dimer 14 was obtained instead of intramolecularly coupled cyclic alkene 2. The mechanistic consideration leading to 14 was discussed and the cation binding properties of dimer 14 and dicarboxylic intermediate 13 was reported, which implies the significance of the principle of preorganization of host's binding sites prior to complexation.

        Mutational Analysis of Cucumber Mosaic Virus Movement Protein Gene

        The movement protein of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is required for cell-to-cell movement of viral RNA. The movement of viral RNA occurs through the plant intercellular connection, the plasmodesmata. The viral movement protein was known to be multi-functional. In this work, a series of deletion mutants of CMV movement protein gene were created to identify the functional domains. The mutated movement protein were produced as inclusion body in E. coli, and purified and renatured. A polyclonal antibody was raised against the CMV-Kor strain (Korean isolate) movement protein expressed in E. coli. The ability of the truncated proteins to bind to ssRNA was assayed by UV cross-linking and gel retardation analyses. The results indicate that the domain between amino acids 118 and 160 of CMV movement protein is essential for ssRNA binding.

      • The Synthesis and Characterization of Water Soluble Host Having Multicarboxy Groups

        New hosts 6 and 8 bearing tri- and hexa-ester groups respectively, were efficiently obtained from tribromo compound 4 and trihydroxybenzoata 5 through high dilution reaction. The structure of hosts 6 and 8 were confirmed by ^1H NMR and FAB+ mass spectroscopy. New water soluble hosts 7 and 9 having hydrophobic binding site were synthesized from hosts 6 and 8, respectively. The hosts 6 and 7 have a small binding site and the size would be complementary for small size guest such as MeOH, CH_3CN, or metal ions. The hosts 8 and 9 have a large binding site enough to capture a large guest molecule such as xylene or fullerene.

        Factors Associated with the Smoking Cessation Behavior according to the Transtheoretical Model in Korean College Students

        목적: 본 연구는 대학생의 금연행위 변화단계를 설명하는데 있어 범이론적 모델 구성요소들의 기여정도를 조사하고 범이론적 모델에 근거한 대학생의 금연행위와 관련된 요인을 파악하기 위해 시행되었다. 방법: 연구대상자는 일반교양 과목을 수강하는 334명의 대학생으로 자가보고식 설문을 통해 범이론적 모델의 구성요소인 금연행위 변화단계, 자기효능감, 의사결정균형 및 변화과정 등의 자료를 수집하였다. 결과: 금연행위 변화 5단계에 따라 자기효능감, 의사결정균형 및 변화과정에서 유의한 차이가 있었고 자기효능감은 금연행위와 관련된 가장 중요한 요인으로 나타났다. 결론: 대학생의 금연 유도를 높이기 위해 범이론적 모델를 적용하는 것이 유용함을 확인하였고 금연행위 변화단계를 고려한 개별화된 프로그램의 개발이 필요하며 특히 대학생의 금연 자기효능감을 증진시킬 수 있는 전략이 요구된다. Objectives: The purposes of this study were to examine the contribution of each of the Transtheoretical Model components in explaining stages of smoking cessation and to identify factors associated with the smoking cessation behavior among Korean college students. Methods: The participants for this study were 334 undergraduate students who enrolled in general education courses. Self-report surveys were distributed and returned. The survey variables comprised the stages of change for smoking cessation, self-efficacy, decisional balances and processes of change in smoking cessation. Results: Significant differences were noted in the five stages of change for self-efficacy, decisional balance, and the processes of change. The strongest factor associated with the smoking cessation behavior was self-efficacy. Conclusion: Study findings indicate application of the Transtheoretical Model may be useful to enhance future smoking cessation efforts in college students. The strategies to enhance smoking cessation self-efficacy in college students will be an important intervention component in future studies.

        Relationship Between Metabolic Syndrome and Familial History of Hypertension/Stroke, Diabetes, and Cardiovascular Disease

        <P>This research analyzes the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in Korea and examines how the presence of a familial history of diseases related to MS, such as hypertension/stroke, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, affect the development of MS in Koreans. The prevalence of MS and its components, as defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel guidelines, were evaluated in nationally representative samples of non-institutionalized civilian Koreans. This analysis is based on the 2001 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which used a stratified multistage probability sampling design. The final study included 5,742 adults who had completed the necessary health examinations and met the diagnosis of MS. The prevalence of MS was 25.5% in men and 28.7% in women. Odds ratio for MS among men with a familial history of hypertension/stroke was higher than that among men who did not have this history. The OR for MS among women with a familial history of hypertension/stroke or diabetes was higher than that among women who had no familial history of these diseases. These results show that familial history of hypertension/stroke and diabetes was significantly related to the presence of MS in both young men and women.</P>

        Giant Cell Tumor of the Temporal Bone in an Old Patient

        We report a case of a 67-year-old woman with giant cell tumor of the temporal bone. A 67-year-old woman presented with localized tenderness, swelling, sensory dysesthesia, dizziness, and headache over the left temporal bone. She was neurologically intact except left hearing impairment, with a nonmobile, tender, palpable mass over the left temporal area. A brain computed tomography(CT) scans showed a relatively well defined heterogenous soft tissue mass with multiple intratumoral cyst and radiolucent, osteolytic lesions involving the left temporal bone. The patient underwent a left frontotemporal craniotomy and zygoma osteotomy with total mass removal. Permanent histopathologic sections revealed a giant cell tumor. She remains well clinically and without tumor recurrence at 2 years after total resection.

        Facile Syntheses and Multi-orthofunctionalizations of Tertiary Benzamides

        Good yields were usually obtained in Pd(O)-catalyzed Suzuki aryl-aryl coupling reaction, even when both coupling partners had an ortho tertiary benzamide functional group. The direct ortho functionalization of oligomeric tertiary benzamides at Snieckus condition is dependent on the chain length. Tertiary benzamide 1 can be o,o-dilithiated only by metal-halogen exchange of the 2,6-dihalo-compound. Bis-tertiary benzamide 9 can be o,o'-dilithiated with excess(4.1 equivalents) s-butyllithium/TMEDA as the lithiating agent. Tris-tertiary benzamide 21 is hard to o,o"-difunctionalize due to steric interactions among the tertiary benzamide functional groups, and due to steric interactions between these functional groups and others (if present) on the termini of the terphenyl unit.
