CARCINOGENICITY OF BRACKEN FERN IN ACI/N RATS

As part of a study to evaluate the caroinogenicity of bracken fern, we have prepared a freeze-dried extract of bracken fern(FDE-BF), spray-dried extract bracken fern(SDE-BF), or have used unprocessed bracken fern(UP-BF) and have mixed each with rat food and have fed these 3 separate diets to separate groups of rats(6 animals per group) for 27 weeks. After 27 weeks, all of these rats then were given basic diet without bracken fern or its extract and sacrificed after the 52nd week and examined. In group FDE-BF and SDE-BF, body weight gain were inhibited, and one rat in each of these two groups developed transitional cell carcinoma of urinary bladder. In group UP-BF, most rats died during the experimental period, and a transitional cell carcinoma, an adenocarcinoma of small intestine, and an adenocarcinoma of large intestine were observed in one rat and an adenocarcinoma of small intestine in each of 3 other rats of this group. Thus, the incidence of carcinoma was found to be markedly lower in Groups FDE-BF and SDE-BF than in Group UP-BF, indicating that the carcinogenicity of the unprocessed bracken fern to be more greater.

Taking the great advantage of Subaru's wide field coverage both in the optical and in the near infrared, we have been providing panoramic views of distant clusters and their surrounding environments over the wide redshift range of 0:4 < z < 3. From our unique data sets, a consistent picture has been emerging that the star forming activity is once enhanced and then truncated in galaxy groups in the outskirts of clusters during the course of cluster assembly at z < 1. Such activity is shifted into cluster cores as we go further back in time to z ~ 1.5. At z = 2 - 2.5, we begin to enter the epoch when massive galaxies are actually forming in the cluster core. And by z ~ 3, we eventually go beyond the major epoch of massive galaxy formation. It is likely that the environmental dependence of star forming activity is at least partly due to the external environmental effects such as galaxy-galaxy interaction in medium density regions at z < 1, while the intrinsic effect of galaxy formation bias overtakes the external effect at higher redshifts, resulting in a large star formation activity in the cluster center.

A hybrid apparatus consisting of a movable emulsion target and a magnetic spectrometer was used in a fixed target Fermilab Tevatron experiment to study the production of heavy quarks by high-energy hadron beams. High-resolution silicon microstrip detectors were used for precise tracking in the dense particle environment. Details of the experimental apparatus, including the data acquisition system, are described.

Low-alloy weathering show poor performance in environments where airborne salinity is high. Recent research on rust and weathering steels has been focused on the rusting mechanism in the presence of chloride and the development of new steels that are resistant in marinelcoastal environments. We show that if a connected Stein manifold M of dimension n has the holomorphic automorphism group Aut(M) isomorphic to $Aut(C^k {\times}(C^*)^{n - k})$ as topological groups, then M itself is biholomorphically equivalent to C^k{\times}(C^*)^{n - k}$. Besides, a new approach to the study of U(n)-actions on complex manifolds of dimension n is given.

It is well-known that there is no analogue to the Riemann mapping theorem in the higher dimensional case. Therefore, it would be an interesting question to find sufficient conditionsl for domains to be biholomorphically equivalent to the unit bal. In this paper, we investigate this questionin the case where the given domains are generalized complex ellipsoids with spherical boundary points.
