        Zinc Oxide Particles Connected by Nano-Sheets and their Heat Treatment

        Particulate films of crystalline ZnO connected by nano-sheets were fabricated in an aqueous solution. This study focused on the annealing behavior of the particulate films, especially the morphology change of the nano-sheets. The nano-sheets had a thickness of 10 nm to 50 nm and width of 1 μm to 10 μm. They were connected to particles closely with no clearance. Their morphology was changed to nanoparticles and porous particulate films of crystalline ZnO by annealing at 500℃ for 1 h in air. The morphology of the sheets changed due to their slimness and/or phase transformation. Crystallization and morphology control of crystalline ZnO at low temperature can be applied to a wide variety of devices supported by low-heat resistant polymer films and would contribute to the environmentally friendly fabrication of oxide devices.

        Risk Factors for Acute Cholangitis Caused by Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium

        Background/Aims: Acute cholangitis (AC) is a potentially life-threatening bacterial infection, and timely antimicrobial treatment, faster than that achieved with bacterial cultures, is recommended. Although the current guidelines refer to empirical antimicrobial treatment, various kinds of antimicrobial agents have been cited because of insufficient analyses on the spectrum of pathogens in AC. Enterococcus spp. is one of the most frequently isolated Gram-positive bacteria from the bile of patients with AC, but its risk factors have not been extensively studied. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors of AC caused by Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium. Methods: Patients with AC who were hospitalized in a Japanese tertiary center between 2010 and 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients’ first AC episodes in the hospital were evaluated. Results: A total of 266 patients with AC were identified. E. faecalis and/or E. faecium was isolated in 56 (21%) episodes of AC. Prior endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST), the presence of a biliary stent, prior cholecystectomy, and past intensive care unit admission were more frequently observed in AC patients with E. faecalis and/or E. faecium than in those without such bacteria. Prior EST was identified as an independent risk factor for AC caused by E. faecalis and/or E. faecium in the multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Given the intrinsic resistance of E. faecalis and E. faecium to antibiotics, clinicians should consider empirical therapy with anti-enterococcal antibiotics for patients with prior EST.         Revisiting the Difference between Traveling-wave and Standing-wave Thermoacoustic Engines - A Simple Analytical Model for the Standing-wave One

        There are two major categories in a thermoacoustic prime-mover. One is the traveling-wave type and the other is the standing-wave type. A simple analytical model of a standing-wave thermoacoustic prime-mover is proposed at relatively low heat-flux for a stack much shorter than the acoustic wavelength, which approximately describes the Brayton cycle. Numerical simulations of Rott’s equations have revealed that the work flow (acoustic power) increases by increasing of the amplitude of the particle velocity (|U|) for the traveling-wave type and by increasing cos for the standing-wave type, where is the phase difference between the particle velocity and the acoustic pressure. In other words, the standing-wave type is a phase-dominant type while the traveling-wave type is an amplitude-dominant one. The ratio of the absolute value of the traveling-wave component (|U|cos) to that of the standing-wave component (|U|sin) of any thermoacoustic engine roughly equals the ratio of the absolute value of the increasing rate of |U| to that of cos. The different mechanism between the traveling-wave and the standing-wave type is discussed regarding the dependence of the energy efficiency on the acoustic impedance of a stack as well as that on !, where ! is the angular frequency of an acoustic wave and is the thermal relaxation time. While the energy efficiency of the traveling-wave type at the optimal ! is much higher than that of the standing-wave type, the energy efficiency of the standing-wave type is higher than that of the traveling-wave type at much higher ! under a fixed temperature difference between the cold and the hot ends of the stack.

        Size and Morphology Controlling of Barium Titanate Nanocubes by Using Hydrothermal Method

        Nano-sized barium titanate (BT) cubes were synthesized by using a hydrothermal method with an aqueous Ti compound. tert-Butylamine was used as an activation agent to expedite precursor hydrolysis. Oleic acid was employed as a surfactant. The concentrations of the raw materials were found to have a very important effect on tailoring the size and the morphology of the BT nanocubes. The size of the nanocubes varied from 15 nm to 30 nm, and the size distribution was relatively narrow. The surface condition and the size of the BT nanocubes were related to the molar ratios of oleic acid to tert-butylamine. High molar ratios resulted in BT nanocubes with rough surfaces.
