Bimetallic Gold−Silver Nanorods Produce Multiple Surface Plasmon Bands

<P>The optical properties of two-component nanorods (NRs) consisting of Au and Ag blocks were investigated. The overall optical properties of the nanorods were tailored by controlling block length. We observed two independent transverse modes in the Au and Ag blocks. Depending on the relative fraction of Au and Ag blocks, the intensity of the transverse modes varied without noticeable peak shifts. However, the strong intraparticle surface plasmon coupling between Au and Ag blocks resulted in the collective appearance of longitudinal LSP modes, including higher-order modes. This experimental observation suggests that the free electrons in Au and Ag blocks oscillate in a coherent fashion along the long axis of NRs, while there is no significant interaction in the free electron oscillation along the short axis of NRs.</P>

OBJECTIVE:: To examine changes in cognitive function and clinical features after a switch from atypical antipsychotics to aripiprazole in patients with schizophrenia. METHOD:: Sixty-one patients with schizophrenia treated with atypical antipsychotics participated in this open-label, 26-week study. Antipsychotics were switched to aripiprazole, and neurocognitive functions were measured at 12 and 26 weeks using the computerized battery. The secondary outcome measures were the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, the Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale, the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia, the Subjective Well-being Under Neuroleptics Scale, and the Drug Attitude Inventory (DAI). The safety measures included metabolic parameters, the Simpson-Angus Rating Scale, the Barnes Akathisia Scale, and the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale. RESULTS:: Significant improvements in cognitive function were observed in the Verbal Learning Test, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, and the Trail Making Test part A after a switch to aripiprazole. Scores on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, the Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale, the DAI, the Simpson-Angus Rating Scale, and the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale were significantly improved. The metabolic parameters, including serum cholesterol levels, were also improved. The changes in cognitive measures were not correlated with the changes in positive symptoms or movements scales. The improvement of the scores on the DAI and the delayed recall of the Verbal Learning Test were significantly greater in the patients treated with antipsychotics for less than 1 year than in those treated for more than 1 year, in whom the improvement in metabolic parameters was significantly greater. CONCLUSIONS:: Patients with schizophrenia who switched from their previous antipsychotics to aripiprazole demonstrated improvements in cognitive function, psychotic symptoms, social function, attitude toward medication, and metabolic abnormalities.
Factors potentiating the risk of mirtazapine-associated restless legs syndrome

<B>Objective</B><P>Mirtazapine is known to often provoke restless legs syndrome (RLS). In this retrospective chart review study, we evaluated the socio-demographic and clinical factors related to mirtazapine-associated RLS.</P><B>Methods</B><P>Computerized medical records of 181 patients treated with mirtazapine from May 2004 to October 2007 were reviewed. RLS was identified using the diagnostic criteria of the International RLS Study Group. Socio-demographic and clinical characteristics were gathered, including comorbid physical illness and concomitant medications.</P><B>Results</B><P>Mirtazapine-associated RLS was observed in 14 patients (8%), and most cases had developed within a few days after starting mirtazapine. Concomitant medication with tramadol, non-opioid analgesics, antihistamine, and dopamine-blocking agents was more frequently prescribed in subjects developing mirtazapine-associated RLS. In logistic regression analysis, concomitant medication with tramadol (odds ratio: 8.61, 95% confidence interval: 1.71–43.49) and dopamine-blocking agents (odds ratio: 4.67, 95% confidence interval: 1.31–16.70) enhanced the risk of mirtazapine-associated RLS.</P><B>Conclusion</B><P>The combined use of mirtazapine with tramadol or dopamine-blocking agents could potentiate the risk of RLS. Clinician should watch carefully for the development of RLS when mirtazapine is administered to patients who are taking tramadol or dopamine-blocking agents. Objective The aim of the study was to develop a checklist for mental health clinicians to predict and manage suicidality.Methods A literature review of the risk and protective factors for suicide was conducted to develop a checklist for evaluating suicidality.Results The fixed risk factors included sex (male), age (older individuals), history of childhood adversity, and a family history of suicide. Changeable risk factors included marital status (single), economic status (poverty), physical illness, history of psychiatric hospitalization, and history of suicide attempts. Recent discharge from a mental hospital and a recent history of suicide attempts were also included. Manageable risk factors included depression (history and current), alcohol problems (frequent drinking and alcohol abuse), hopelessness, agitation, impulsivity, impaired reality testing, and command hallucinations. Protective factors included responsibility to family, social support, moral objections to suicide, religiosity, motivation to get treatment, ability to cope with stress, and a healthy lifestyle. A final score was assigned based on the sum of the risk and protective factor scores.Conclusion We believe that the development of this checklist will help mental health clinicians to better assess those at risk for suicidal behavior. Further studies are necessary to validate the checklist.

Protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) catalyzes the oxidation of disulfides and the isomerizatiob of incorrect disulfides in new polypeptides during folding in the oxidizing environment of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). To increase recombinant protein hSCF (human stem cell factor) production, we have developed expression system using the Bombyx mori PDI (bPDI) as a fusion partner. bPDI gene fusion was found to improve the production of recombinant hSCFs. Thus, we conclude that bPDI gene fusion will be very useful for the large-scale production of biologically active recombinant proteins.

<B>Objective</B><P>To investigate changes in cognitive function and clinical features following a switch from oral atypical antipsychotics (AAPs) to long-acting injectable risperidone (LAIR) in patients with schizophrenia.</P><B>Methods</B><P>Thirty-six patients with schizophrenia treated with oral AAPs participated in this open-label, 26-week study. Cognitive functions were measured at baseline and at 12 and 26 weeks. The secondary outcome measures included the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale (SOFAS), Scale for Unawareness of Mental Disorder (SUMD), and measurements for extrapyramidal symptoms.</P><B>Results</B><P>Significant improvements in cognitive function were observed in the backward Digit Span Test, Verbal Learning Test, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, correct responses on the Continuous Performance Test, and Trail Making Test part B following a switch to LAIR. Scores on the PANSS, SOFAS, SUMD, and the Simpson–Angus Rating Scale also improved significantly. Most improvements in neurocognitive function were not correlated with clinical measures. Weight gain and hyperprolactinemia were the most common adverse events.</P><B>Conclusions</B><P>Switching from oral AAPs to LAIR improved cognitive function including vigilance, verbal learning and memory, executive function, sustained attention, and visuomotor speed in patients with schizophrenia. Cloning and Characterization of Bombyx mori Cyclophilin A

Cyclophilins are originally identified as cytosolic binding protein of the immunosuppressive drug cyclosporine A. They have an activity of peptidyl prolyl cis/trans-isomerases (PPIase), which may play important roles in protein folding, trafficking, assembly and cell signaling. In this study, we report the cloning and characterization of a Bombyx mori cyclophilin A (bCypA) cDNA. The full-length cDNA of bCypA consist of 947 nucleotides with a polyadenylation signal sequence AATAAA and contain an open reading frame of 498 nucleotides encoding a polypeptide of 166 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence of bCypA shares a central peptidyl prolyl cis/trans-isomerase and a cyclosporin-A-binding domain with other cyclophilin sequences. Relative quantification real-time (RT) PCR analysis shows that mRNA transcripts of bCypA are detected in all the investigated tissues and highest expression level in the skin of 3-day-old 5 instar larva. Also, bCypA had PPIase activity on the proline-containing peptides. Accordingly, we suggest that bCypA is a new member of the cyclophilin A (CyPA) family and will be useful for quality control of bioactivity recombinant proteins with proline-containing peptides.
