        Severity of COVID-19 in bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccinated population

        Purpose: Considering the cross-protection reported for bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination on viral respiratory infections, it has been proposed that it could reduce the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The objective of the current study is to investigate the association between the severity of COVID-19 with prior BCG vaccination in adult patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Materials and Methods: Adult patients (18 years or above) with positive SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction admitted in July 2020 were included in this cross-sectional study. Patients were classified into non-severe, severe, and critical diseases. History of prior BCG vaccination and the presence of a BCG vaccination scar were recorded. Results: Out of 103 patients, 64 patients with prior history of BCG vaccinations were compared with 39 patients without BCG vaccination in childhood. The median age was 55 years and 64 years in BCG vaccinated & non-BCG vaccinated patients (p-value=0.002). There was male predominance in both groups and frequent comorbid illnesses were hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Severe COVID-19 was found in 91 patients (88.3%) followed by non-severe disease and critical diseases i.e., 7 (6.8%) and 5 (4.9%) patients, respectively. No association of prior BCG vaccination with disease severity of COVID-19 was found in this study and mortality was 8.7%. Out of nine patients who expired only 2 (22.2%) had a prior history of BCG vaccination (p-value=0.01). Secondary infections were present in 26 patients and the majority had pneumonia. Conclusion: The BCG vaccine has no impact on the severity of COVID-19 but could have a protective role with a low mortality rate in already infected patients.

        Effect of Age of Seedling and Phytohormones on Micropropagation of Indica Rice(Oryza sativa L.) from Meristem Culture

        An efficient protocol for in vitro micropropagation of seven indica rice varieties was developed from meristem culture. Meristem (leaf base) was isolated from different age of seedlings and cultured on MS medium without hormones and supplemented with different concentrations of NAA and BAP. Regeneration of plantlets from meristem was observed within five days of culture. The meristem isolated from 4-day old seedlings gave highest regeneration on hormone free MS medium. Histological study of meristem (leaf base) from 4-day old seedlings confirmed the presence of meristematic cells. Regenerated plants were multiplied on MS medium supplemented with 0.05 ㎎/L NAA and 5 ㎎/L BAP. An average of five plants were obtained from single regenerated meristem. The plants regenerated from meristem showed morphological uniformity.

        Calibration of Apis Mellifera Hives for Pollination of Brassica Crop at Rawalpindi

        The response of honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) pollination on canola yield with reference to most suitable number of bee hive need per unit area of crops in order to meet optimum pollination needs and better economic yields by comparing number of hives and yield components an experiment was conducted at Beekeeping and Hill Fruit Pests Research, Station Rawalpindi during 2017-18 in complete randomized block design with two sets of four treatments for comparison: 1 hive acre<sup>-1</sup>, 2 hives acre<sup>-1</sup>, 3 hives acre<sup>-1</sup> and 0 hive acre<sup>-1</sup>. The hives were kept inside the experimental area. Parameters were assessed: pollination density, pollinator's diversity, agronomic and economic yield. In case of pollination density, the cumulative mean abundance bee species revealed that at 1200 hours, Apis mellifera was the most abundant and frequent visitor with a mean population of 8.69 bees/plant followed by A. dorsata (0.72), Syrphid fly (0.2) and other pollinators. Minimum bee population was observed during 1400 hours, mainly due to the closure of flowers and partially due to high temperature (>35℃). Pollinator diversity revealed that A. mellifera was the most dominant pollinator of Brassica crop with highest abundance (71%). A. dosata ranked 2<sup>nd</sup> (16%) followed by A. florea (6%) respectively.
