To investigate the influence of age in the process of nerve regeneration, the right common peroneal nerves of 33, one-month-old, and 29, ten-month-old rats were transected and resutured. At four, eight, sixteen and twenty four weeks after the nerve repair, the motor nerve conduction velocity(MNCV), latency, and maximum amplitude of the evoked potential from the peroneus longus muscle were measured. At four and eight weeks after the operation, MNCV, latency, and maximum amplitude showed higher recovery rates(recovery rate(%)=operated/control×100) in one-month-old rats than in ten-month-old rats, particularly at four weeks after the operation. However, there were no statistical differences in the recovery of the MNCV, latency and maximum amplitude at sixteen and twenty four weeks after the operation between the two age groups. These studies have shown that the recovery in the early stage is significantly greater in one-month-old rats than in ten-month-old rats, however, nerve regeneration can be successful in both age groups in later stages.
