Medicinal plants with antimicrobial action havebeen investigated for uses against biofilms, among which,Cymbopogon nardus, citronella, stands out as a promisingspecies. The present study aims to evaluate the antimicrobialand antibiofilm action of the essential oil of C. nardus (EOCN) and geraniol on Gram-negative and positivebacteria from the determination of minimum inhibitoryconcentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentrationand inhibition of biofilms. In the results, the EOCNproduced a 41 mm halo on S. aureus, which was susceptiblewith MIC values of 0.5 and 0.25 mg/mL for theEOCN and geraniol respectively, both with bactericidaleffect. The antibiofilm action was confirmed, the EOCNand geraniol reduced the biofilm biomass of S. aureus up to100% between 0.5 and 4 mg/mL concentrations. Thereduction of cell viability was 0.25 and 1 mg/mL, ofEOCN and geraniol, respectively. EOCN and geraniol wereshown to be promising antibiotic against S. aureus.

Contrast reflux from superior vena cava into azygos system may be mistaken for pathology. We report a case occurring during CT coronary angiography (CTCA) causing diagnostic uncertainty. A linear hyperdensity anterior and left of the upper thoracic vertebrae was seen during CTCA and mistaken for abnormal calcification. However, this was not seen on non-contrasted coronary calcium images. The hyperdensity correlated to the location of the unenhanced azygos vein seen on test bolus images. Although reported in CT pulmonary angiography, contrast in the azygos system is less common in CTCAs as the longer scan delay allows contrast washout. However, right arm contrast injection, the default for CTCA, is an association. Moreover, right heart and pericardial diseases are also potential causes. Cardiac imagers should be aware of this potential pitfall.
Common Presence of Non-Transferrin-Bound Iron Among Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

<P>OBJECTIVE: Recently, we reported increased cardiovascular disease mortality among supplemental vitamin C users with type 2 diabetes in a prospective cohort study. Because vitamin C may cause oxidative stress in the presence of redox active iron, we hypothesized that non-transferrin-bound iron (NTBI), a form of iron susceptible to redox activity, may be present in patients with type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We measured serum NTBI levels using high-performance liquid chromatography in 48 patients with known diabetes (at least 5 years duration since diagnosis), 49 patients with newly diagnosed diabetes, and 47 healthy control subjects (frequency matched on age and sex). RESULTS: NTBI was commonly present in diabetes: 59% in newly diagnosed diabetes and 92% in advanced diabetes. Mean NTBI values varied significantly between the three groups, with the highest values being observed in patients with known diabetes and the lowest in the control subjects (0.62 +/- 0.43 vs. 0.24 +/- 0.29 vs. 0.04 +/- 0.13 micromol/l Fe). Serum total iron or percent transferrin saturation were very similar among the three groups, yet NTBI was strongly associated with serum total iron (r = 0.74, P < 0.01) and percent transferrin saturation (r = 0.70, P < 0.01) among the patients with known diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: Consistent with our hypothesis, these data demonstrate the common existence of NTBI in type 2 diabetic patients with a strong gradient with severity. Prospective cohort studies are required to clarify the clinical relevance of increased NTBI levels.</P>

Melanosis developed in shrimp (Penaeus vannamei)is mainly initiated by polyphenoloxidase (PPO),thus understanding of the characteristics of PPO in shrimpis important for controlling the melanosis of shrimp. Theshrimp cephalothorax turns black most rapidly amongst allthe tissues during the chilled storage. Crude PPO extractedfrom this cephalothorax has an optimal pH of 6.0 and anoptimal temperature of 50 C. PPO is relatively stable underneutral and weak alkaline conditions (pH 5.5–9.0) andthe temperature range of 25–35 C. The kinetic parametersKm and Vmax were recorded as 3.02 mM and 54.3 U/mg ofprotein, respectively, using L-Dopa as a substrate. Themolecular weight of PPO was estimated as 200–220 kDaby an activity staining test. A hydroxypyridinone derivative,5-hydroxy-1-octyl-4-oxo-1,4-dihydropyridine-2-carbaldehydeO-ethyl oxime, was demonstrated to efficientlyinhibit the PPO, indicating that this compound might findapplication as a shrimp preservative.
