        Assumed-Competence Based on Undervaluing Others as a Determinant of Emotions: Focusing on Anger and Sadness

        The purpose of this study is to examine whether a new construct “Assumed‐Competence based on undervaluing others (AC)” could be a determinant of anger and sadness for contemporary Japanese adolescents. A set of questionnaires was administered to 584 high school students, who rated ACS‐2 (Assumed‐Competence Scale, second version), Rosenberg’s self‐esteem scale, in relation to their perceived emotional reactions toward certain negative personal and social events, and other scales. The results indicated that the students who got angry at personal events were likely to have high AC. However, those who felt neither anger nor sadness in relation to such social events were likely to have high AC. The role of AC in emotional reactions and suggestions for future research was also discussed.

      • APPLICATION OF ACTIVE POWER FILTER TO UPS SYSTEMS

        Recently uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems are widely used in a variety of fields as highly reliable power sources. To cope with a service interruption that lasts for a considerably long time, the input side of a UPS is equipped with a synchronous generator in most cases as an emergency power supply. In practical operation, however, the following problems must be borne in mind.<br/> (1) A synchronous generator tends to be affected by harmonic currents and in an extreme case, its rotor, etc. may suffer overheating. For this reason, a considerably large generator capacity is called for, as related later.<br/> (2) Impedance of a synchronous generator is generally greater than that of a commercial power supply, thus easily giving rise to a voltage distortion due to the effect of harmonic currents.<br/> (3) The power-factor improvement capacitors in the UPS system can give rise to resonance in conjunction with impedance of commercial power supply or the synchronous generator.<br/> Since the impedance of the synchronous generator is comparatively large as mentioned above, the resonance frequency tends to move to a low-order side in the synchronous generator operation. In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, the authors have invest­igated the application of an active power filter (AF) to a UPS system and confirmed the effect by actually connecting it to a 750kVA UPS system, to be described below. This paper first describes the relationship between harmonic currents and the required capacity of a synchronous generator. This will suggest that the capacity of a synchronous generator can be greatly reduced by an AF even with a comparativeLy small capacity. This paper then outlines the UPS system and the AF used for this testing and described the result of field tests. Lastly the effect of the AF in restraining harmonic currents is described to reveal<br/> the influence of circuit impedances.

      • Formation and Cycloreversion of 2-Silacyclobuta[2.3]cyclophances via Photoinduced Electron Transfer

        Irradiation of an acetonitrile solution containing dimethylbis(4-vinylphenylmethyl)silane 1a in the presence of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene leads to formation of the intramolecular photocycloadduct, 2-sila-cyclobuta[2.3]cyclophane(2a). In contrast, prolonged irradiation gave insoluble polymeric material. The photocycloreversion of 2a occurs efficiently (quantum yields exceeds unity) by use of redox-type photosensitization in the presence of magnesium perchlorate. The transient absorption spectra generated by pulse radiolysis and gamma-radiolysis show that the radical cation species generated from 1a is different from that arising from 2a.
