본고는 근대 중국의 향촌사회의 특질(特質)을 해명하기 위해 1920년대 초기의 광동(廣東)에서 진형명(陳炯明)에 의해 실시된 지방자치제와 그에 대한 향촌사회의 반응을 고찰하고자 한다. 광동은 명(明)나라와 청(淸)나라 시기를 거치며 종족(宗族)을 기반으로 한 향촌구조가 형성되어 청 말기의 지방자치정책에 대해서도 종족을 단위로 하는 자치단체가 설립되었다. 따라서 진형명도 이를 고려하여 종족에 따른 전통적인 자치를 향촌자치정책에 포함시킬 것을 계획하였다. 한편, 향촌에서는 신문화운동의 영향을 받은 청년층이 향촌자치의 실시에 있어 전통적인 종족 형태의 개혁을 주장함에 따라 전통적인 종족의 안에서 사회적 지위를 지키려는 노년층과의 대립이 발생하였다. 그러나 진형명의 정책도, 청년층이 주장한 향촌자치안도 종족 그 자체를 부정하지는 않았으며 어디까지나 종족의 유지를 전제로 하며 그 안에서 종족의 개혁을 주장한 것에 지나지 않았다. In order to make clear the characteristics of rural society in modern China, this paper takes up the local autonomy policy implemented by Chen jiongming in Guangdong of the early 1920s, and considers the reaction of rural society to it. In Guangdong, through the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the rural construction based on clan was formed. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, unit of clans under the local autonomy policy established many autonomy associations. Then, taking into account this situation, Chen jiongming plans to take clans as foundation of traditional autonomy into the village autonomy policy. On the other hand, in rural areas, the some young who were subject to the influence of the New Culture Movement advocated reform of the traditional clan, and tried to carry out village autonomy. Therefore the old who keep up social status and power in the traditional clan opposed. However, whether Chen jiongming advocated village autonomy policy or the young, the purpose is not to deny the clan, but rather to want to reform autonomy in the clan.
