Background/Aims The prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) varies from 4% to 20% in different Asian nations. Prevalence of IBS in native North Indian community is not known. Methods Between November 2008 to December 2009, we estimated the prevalence of IBS in a rural community of Ballabgarh block, located in Haryana state. A structured questionnaire based on Rome Ⅲ module was used to collect symptoms related to IBS from all the participants in a door to door survey. A Rome Ⅲ criterion was used for diagnosis of IBS. IBS was further classified based on predominance of symptoms as constipation predominant, diarrhea predominant, mixed and unspecified based on Rome Ⅲ module. Results There were 4,767 participants (mean age 34.6±10.8, males 50%). Overall, 555 (11.6%; 95% CI, 10.7-12.5) had constipation, 542 (11.4%; 95% CI, 10.5-12.3) diarrhea and 823 (17.3%; 95% CI, 16.2-18.4) abdominal pain. The overall prevalence of IBS was 4% (95% CI, 3.5-4.6). The prevalence of constipation predominant IBS was 0.3% (95% CI, 0.16-0.49), diarrhea predominant IBS 1.5% (95% CI, 1.18-1.90), mixed IBS 1.7% (95% CI, 1.35-2.11) and unsubtyped IBS 0.5% (95% CI, 0.32-0.75). The prevalence of IBS was significantly higher in females compared with males (4.8% vs 3.2%, P=0.008). However, there was no significant difference between males and females in the prevalence of different subtypes of IBS. The prevalence increased with age. Conclusions The prevalence of IBS in a North Indian community is 4%. IBS poses a significant burden on the rural adults. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2011;17:82-87)

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of ionic and non-ionic-based contrast media (in vitro study) and the combinatorial effect of chitosan-based endo-radiopaque solution (CERS) (in vivo study) for visualization of the root canal anatomy. Materials and Methods: In vitro study (120 teeth): The root canal of maxillary premolars and molars (in vitro group 1 and 2 respectively, n = 60 each) were analyzed using 4 different contrast media (subgroups: Omnipaque 350, Iopamidol, Xenetix 350, and Urografin 76; n = 15 each) in combination with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). Based on the results of the in vitro study, in vivo study (80 teeth) was done to compare Xenetix 350 + 5.25% NaOCl with CERS (in vivo group 1 and 2 respectively, n = 40 each) on maxillary and mandibular premolars and molars. Two endodontists used radiovisiography to assess the depth of ingress and identify the aberrant root anatomy after access cavity preparation, and after initial cleaning and shaping of canals. Kruskal-Wallis test was used for in vitro comparison (p < 0.05), and Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Mann-Whitney U test for in vivo analysis (p < 0.01). Results: In vitro study, Xenetix 350 + 5.25% NaOCl facilitated a significant higher visualization (p < 0.05). For in vivo study, CERS had a statistically significant depth of ingress (p < 0.01), and was efficient in identifying the aberrant root canal anatomy of premolars and molars. Conclusions: CERS facilitates better visualization of the root canal anatomy of human premolars and molars.

Wireless sensor networks are generally deployed for specific applications to accomplish certain objectives over a period of time. To fulfill these objectives, it is crucial that the sensor network continues to function for a long time, even if some of its nodes become faulty. Energy efficiency and fault tolerance are undoubtedly the most crucial requirements for the design of an information extraction protocol for any sensor network application. However, most existing software agent based information extraction protocols are incapable of satisfying these requirements because of static agent itineraries and large agent sizes. This paper proposes an Information Extraction protocol based on Multiple software Agents with Dynamic Itineraries (IEMADI), where multiple software agents are dispatched in parallel to perform tasks based on the query assigned to them. IEMADI decides the itinerary for an agent dynamically at each hop using local information. Through mathematical analysis and simulation, we compare the performance of IEMADI with a well known static itinerary based protocol with respect to energy consumption and response time. The results show that IEMADI provides better performance than the static itinerary based protocols.

The use of mobile agents for collaborative processing in wireless sensor network has gained considerable attention. This is when mobile agents are used for data aggregation to exploit redundant and correlated data. The efficiency of agent-based data aggregation depends on the agent migration scheme. However, in general, most of the proposed schemes are centralized approach-based schemes where the sink node determines the migration paths for the agents before dispatching them in the sensor network. The main limitations with such schemes are that they need global network topology information for deriving the migration paths of the agents, which incurs additional communication overhead, since each node has a very limited communication range. In addition, a centralized approach does not provide fault tolerant and adaptive migration paths. In order to solve such problems, we have proposed a distributed approach-based scheme for determining the migration path of the agents where at each hop, the local information is used to decide the migration of the agents. In addition, we also propose a local repair mechanism for dealing with the faulty nodes. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme performs better than existing schemes in the presence of faulty nodes withinthe networks, and manages to report the aggregated data to the sink faster.

The imposition of a commercial policy does not generally come as a complete surprise to the affected parties. Exporting firms have some information about the political climate in their export markets, and thus, can assess the probability of a trade restraint being imposed. In the case of a quantity restriction, it is likely that the volume of trade allowed after the restraint is positively related to the volume of trade before the restraint. Thus, firms have an incentive to increase current production so that the losses they would incur in the event of a restriction are decreased. Such an incentive is referred to in the literature as the ``Yano effect``. This paper uses an imperfectly competitive model to develop a different and more direct channel for the Yano effect and to determine its impact on intertemporal welfare.
