<P>Cost-effective 'green' methods of producing Ag nanoparticles (NPs) are being examined because of the potential of these NPs as antimicrobials. Ag NPs were generated from Ag ions using extracellular metabolites from a soil-borne Pythium species. The NPs were variable in size, but had one dimension less than 50 nm and were biocoated; aggregation and coating changed with acetone precipitation. They had dose-dependent lethal effects on a soil pseudomonad, Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6, and were about 30-fold more effective than Ag+ ions. A role of reactive oxygen species in cell death was demonstrated by use of fluorescent dyes responsive to superoxide anion and peroxide accumulation. Also mutants of the pseudomonad, defective in enzymes that protect against oxidative stress, were more sensitive than the wild type strain; mutant sensitivity differed between exposure to Ag NPs and Ag+ ions demonstrating a nano-effect. Imaging of bacterial cells treated with the biocoated Ag NPs revealed no cell lysis, but there were changes in surface properties and cell height. These findings support that biocoating the NPs results in limited Ag release and yet they retained potent antimicrobial activity.</P>

In some cases it is important to be able to measure not only the total sound intensity on a panel surface in a vehicle cabin, but also the components of that intensity due to sound radiation and due to absorption from the incident field. For example, these intensity components may be needed for calibration of energy flow models of the cabin noise. A robust method based on surface absorption coefficient measurement is presented in his paper.

Delay-and-sum (DAS) Planar Beamforming has been a widely used Noise Source Identification Technique for the last decade. It is a quick one shot measurement technique being able to map sources that are larger than the array itself. The spatial resolution is proportional to distance between array and source, and inversely proportional to wavelength, thus the resolution is only good at medium to high frequencies. Improved algorithms using iterative de-convolution techniques offers up to ten times better resolution. The principle behind these techniques is described in this paper, as well as measurement examples from the automotive industry are presented.

Fruits of Cucumis callosus (Rottl.) Cogn. (Family: Cucurbitaceae) plant, are commonly known as “bitter cucumber” (English) and “Kachri” (Hindi) in India and have been traditionally used for antioxidant, rich source of vitamin C, antidiabetic and anticancer actions. Tribal peoples of Odissa and West-Bengal are using these fruits during worship and as a vegetable. In vitro cytotoxicity of methanolic seed extract of C. callosus (MSCC) at different concentrations (25, 50, 100, 200, 400) μg/ ml and methanolic pericarp extract of C. callosus (MPCC) at (30, 60, 120, 240, 360) μg/ml on Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) cell line, has been evaluated by using the MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] assay and Trypan blue dye exclusion assay for a period of 3 h treatment. Acute toxicity and in vivo teratotoxicity of both extracts were also evaluated using the Zebrafish embryo developmental assay. The MSCC and MPCC showed the direct cytotoxic effect on EAC cells in a dose-dependent manner with IG50 value 273.17 and 235.08 μg/ml respectively. The MPCC in 240 and 360 μg/ml showed a strong teratotoxic effect on Zebrafish embryo in a dose-dependent manner. The cytotoxicity and teratotoxicity of MPCC were due to overexpressed CYP450 mediated apoptosis in μthe tissue.
