Sensation Seeking and Creativity in Prospective Educators and Musicians
Günseli Oral 대한사고개발학회 2008 The International Journal of Creativity & Problem Vol.18 No.2
Research demonstrates that creativity and sensation seeking are closely connected. According to the literature, performing artists such as musicians do exhibit higher levels of sensation seeking when compared to other creative groups. The present study investigated the effect of sensation seeking on creativity in 127 Turkish university students in the departments of music and education. The subjects were simultaneously administered Something About Myself (SAM) in the Khatena-Torrance Creative Perception Inventory, and Sensation Seeking Scale from the Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire. Results demonstrated that sensation seeking did not differ according to school type. A significant influence of sensation seeking on SAM was obtained. Students in the music department had significantly higher scores on artistry dimension, whereas students in the department of elementary school education had significantly higher scores on environmental sensitivity dimension. Similar to previous research findings, sensation seeking was found to be a significant predictor of creativity.
