        MODELING EXTRAGALACTIC FOREGROUNDS AND SECONDARIES FOR UNBIASED ESTIMATION OF COSMOLOGICAL PARAMETERS FROM PRIMARY COSMIC MICROWAVE BACKGROUND ANISOTROPY

        <P>Using the latest physical modeling and constrained by the most recent data, we develop a phenomenological parameterized model of the contributions to intensity and polarization maps at millimeter wavelengths from external galaxies and Sunyaev-Zeldovich effects. We find such modeling to be necessary for estimation of cosmological parameters from Planck data. For example, ignoring the clustering of the infrared background would result in a bias in ns of 7s in the context of an eight-parameter cosmological model. We show that the simultaneous marginalization over a full foreground model can eliminate such biases, while increasing the statistical uncertainty in cosmological parameters by less than 20%. The small increases in uncertainty can be significantly reduced with the inclusion of higher-resolution ground-based data. The multi-frequency analysis we employ involves modeling 46 total power spectra and marginalization over 17 foreground parameters. We show that we can also reduce the data to a best estimate of the cosmic microwave background power spectra, with just two principal components (with constrained amplitudes) describing residual foreground contamination.</P>

        Pretreatment with Korean red ginseng or dimethyl fumarate attenuates reactive gliosis and confers sustained neuroprotection against cerebral hypoxic-ischemic damage by an Nrf2-dependent mechanism

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The transcriptional factor Nrf2, a master regulator of oxidative stress and inflammation that are tightly linked to the development and progression of cerebral ischemia pathology, plays a vital role in inducing the endogenous neuroprotective process. Here, hypoxic-ischemia (HI) was performed in adult Nrf2 knockout and wildtype mice that were orally pretreated either with standardized Korean red ginseng extract (Ginseng) or dimethyl fumarate (DMF), two candidate Nrf2 inducers, to determine whether the putative protection was through an Nrf2-dependent mechanism involving the attenuation of reactive gliosis. Results show that Nrf2 target cytoprotective genes were distinctly elevated following HI. Pretreatment with Ginseng or DMF elicited robust neuroprotection against the deterioration of acute cerebral ischemia damage in an Nrf2-dependent manner as revealed by the reductions of neurological deficits score, infarct volume and brain edema, as well as enhanced expression levels of Nrf2 target antioxidant proteins and anti-inflammation mediators. In both ischemic striatum and cortex, the dynamic pattern of attenuated reactive gliosis in astrocytes and microglia, including affected astrocytic dysfunction in glutamate metabolism and water homeostasis, correlated well with the Nrf2-dependent neuroprotection by Ginseng or DMF. Furthermore, such neuroprotective benefits extended to the late phase of ischemic brain damage after HI, as evidenced by improvements in neurobehavioral outcomes, infarct volume and brain edema. Overall, pretreatment with Ginseng or DMF identically attenuates reactive gliosis and confers long-lasting neuroprotective efficacy against ischemic brain damage through an Nrf2-dependent mechanism.       • Neuroprotective effect of HT008-1, a prescription of traditional Korean medicine, on transient focal cerebral ischemia model in rats

        <P>HT008-1 is one of the prescriptions used in Traditional Korean Medicine for the treatment of mental and physical weakness. It is composed of Panax ginseng, Acanthopanax senticosus, Angelica sinensis and Scutellaria baicalensis, which have been reported to have various pharmacological effects on the central nervous system. The study investigated whether HT008-1 has neuroprotective effects in a focal cerebral ischemia rat model. Stroke was induced in rats by 2 h of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) followed by 22 h of reperfusion. HT008-1 (30, 100 and 300 mg/kg) and the component herbs (300 mg/kg) were administered orally twice at 0 and 2 h after ischemia. Oral administration of 300 mg/kg HT008-1 reduced brain infarction by 45.7%, prolonged the latency time by 24.8% in the rotarod test, and enhanced the score by 17.0% in the balance beam test. Only P. ginseng and S. baicalensis showed protective effects, and HT008-1 showed a greater effect than its component herbs. HT008-1 down-regulated the COX-2 and OX-42 expression in the penumbra region. In conclusion, the results show that HT008-1 may be effective in a rat stroke model by an antiinflammatory mechanism and may improve sensory-motor function by reducing damage in the cortex and caudoputamen.
