A Study on Influential Factors for Adoption of Smartphone Use of Older Adults

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate major factors influencing adoption of smartphone to promote its use by older adults. Background: With the number of smartphone users increasing rapidly, interests have been increased on issues of smartphone adoption for older adults who will be a part of major customers of future. Method: Seven major factors were extracted from 36 survey questions using factor analysis. Regression analysis was also applied to determine specific factors affecting intention of use based on user vs non-user of smartphone, age, gender of user, and educational background. Results: Factors directly impacting on the intention of smartphone adoption were statistically different for users and non-users of smartphone. Moreover, factors influencing on age, gender, and educational background of smartphone users were also different. Conclusion: This study provided some implications on major factors influencing use of smartphone by older adults. Application: The results from this research may indicate some considerations for smartphone developers to promote the use of smartphone for older adults.

Smartphone Adoption using Smartphone Use and Demographic Characteristics of Elderly

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate major factors influencing adoption of smartphone to promote its use by older adults. Background: Despite increasing proportion of elderly people and elderly market, the proportion of elderly smartphone user is still relatively small compared to whole smartphone users. Thus, we need to find out major factors influencing adoption of smartphone to increase proportion of elderly smartphone users. Method: Seven major factors were extracted from 36 survey questions using factor analysis. Regression analysis was also applied to determine specific factors affecting intention of use based on user versus non-user of smartphone, age, gender, and educational background. Results: As results of factor analysis and regression analysis, major factors influencing adoption of smartphone for elderly users were significantly different according to gender, age, educational background based on smartphone users or non-users. Conclusion: The result of this study identified major factors influencing adoption of smartphone for the elderly and provided basic information related to adoption of smartphone according to elderly people"s characteristics. Consequently, we can expect to reduce the information gap and to improve quality of life for the elderly. Application: The development and marketing strategy could be applied differently based on the factors influencing adoption of smartphone. It is also possible to develop a prediction model for smartphone adoption according to elderly users" characteristics.

최근 차량 내 클러스터 게이지, AVN 등의 개별 시스템의 통합화 기술 적용으로 분리되어 있던 정보를 한 디스플레이에 통합하여 표시하는 추세를 보이고 있다. 벤츠 A-Class 2019와 폭스바겐 Touareg 2019는 AVN 화면에서 클러스터 정보를 편집하는 기능을 제공하고 있으며 테슬라 Model 3는 AVN에서 기존 클러스터 정보 및 차량설정(도어/위도우 잠금 기능, 와이퍼 기능 등) 표시하고 있다. 이와 같이 통합시스템을 적용하는 차량에서 디스플레이를 통해 표시 및 처리해야 하는 정보가 증가하고 있으나 통합시스템을 활용한 기능 및 기능의 사용성에 대한 연구는 미흡하다. 본 연구는 통합시스템의 적용에 따라서 사용자에게 필요한 기능을 제안하였다. 3가지 컨셉(접근성 강화, 맞춤형 HMI, 적응형 HMI)을 바탕으로 통합 검색, 통합 즐겨찾기, 제안 기능을 도출하였다. 기능의 사용성 평가는 총 32명을 대상으로 Within Subject Design으로 진행하였으며 제안된 기능의 사용성 검증을 위하여 최신 AVN 적용 차량(그랜저)을 기준 차량으로 제안된 기능을 구현한 키오스크(클러스터 및 AVN) 간 비교 평가를 수행하였다. 실험 피험자의 과제 수행시간을 측정하였고, 기능 조작에 대한 기억용이성, 일관성, 직관성, 전반적 만족도를 평가하였다. 평가 결과, 통합 검색 및 통합 즐겨 찾기의 과제수행 시간은 기준차량과 비교, 유의한 차이를 보였다. 또한, 동일한 피험자가 3번이상 반복하여 평가한 제안기능에서는 사용횟수가 증가함에 따라 수행 시간이 감소함을 확인할 수 있었다. 결과적으로, 통합 시스템을 적용한 디스플레이에서 제안된 기능의 효용성을 검증할 수 있었으며, 향후 일부 제안기능의 부족한 부분을 추가 연구 및 검증을 통해 보완한다면, 통합시스템에서 다양하고 많은 정보/컨텐츠를 사용자가 안전하고 효과적으로 사용하는데 본 연구가 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
