        The impact of childhood maltreatment on young adults’ mental health: Evidence from the Philippines

        Using a new retrospective data set on young Filipino adults, this study aims to quantify the prevalence, risk factors, and mental health consequences in later life of childhood maltreatment in the Philippines. A survey was conducted with a sample of 155 adults (83 women, 72 men) aged 18–24 living in Quezon City, the largest metropolitan city in the Philippines. Findings show that four out of five young Filipino adults experience minor physical violence during childhood, while one out of four suffer severe physical violence. Boys from less educated families that grow up in urban environments face the highest risks. While we find a strong link between childhood physical abuse and young adults’ mental health, no such effect was found for experiences of psychological aggression. Childhood physical abuse was further found to have negative effects on young adults’ family relations, social relations, and overall satisfaction with life

        Development of a Data Acquisition System for the Testing and Verification of Electrical Power Quality Meters

        This paper presents the development of a software supported acquisition system for metrological verification and testing of the equipment for monitoring and analysis of the basic electrical power quality parameters. The described procedure consists of two functionally connected segments. The first segment involves generation of the reference three-phase voltage signals, including the possibility of simulation of the various power quality disturbances, typical for electrical power distribution networks. The second part of this procedure includes the real-time recording of power quality disturbances in three-phase distribution networks. The procedure is functionally supported by the virtual instrumentation concept, including a software application developed in LabVIEW environment and data acquisition boards NI 6713 and NI 9215A. The software support of this system performs graphical presentation of the previously generated and recorded signal waveforms. A number of the control functions and buttons, implemented on the virtual instrument front panels, are provided to adjust the basic signal acquisition, generation and recording parameters.

        A Novel Linearization Method of Sin/Cos Sensor Signals Used for Angular Position Determination

        In this paper a novel method for angular position determination using sensors with sin/cos output and without an excitation signal, is presented. The linearization of the sensor transfer characteristic and digitalization of the measurement results are performed simultaneously with a goal to increase the measurement resolution. This improvement is particularly important for low angular velocities, and can be used to increase the resolution of incremental Hall, magnetic and optical sensors. This method includes two phases of sin/cos signal linearization. In the first linearization phase the pseudo-linear signal is generated. The second linearization phase, executed by the two-stage piecewise linear ADC, is an additional linearization of the pseudo-linear signal. Based on the LabVIEW software simulations of the proposed method, the contribution of each processing phase to a final measurement error is examined. After the proposed method is applied within $2{\pi}$ [rad] range, the maximal nonlinearity is reduced from 0.3307 [rad] ($18.9447^{\circ}$) to $3{\cdot}10^{-4}$ [rad] ($0.0172^{\circ}$).
