DIG: Degree of inter-reference gap for a dynamic buffer cache management

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The effectiveness of the buffer cache replacement is critical to the performance of I/O systems. In this paper, we propose a <I>degree of inter-reference gap</I> (DIG) based block replacement scheme. This scheme keeps the simplicity of the <I>least recently used</I> (LRU) scheme and does not depend on the detection of access regularities. The proposed scheme is based on the <I>low inter-reference recency set</I> (LIRS) scheme, which is currently known to be very effective. However, the proposed scheme employs several history information items whereas the LIRS scheme uses only one history information item. The overhead of the proposed scheme is almost negligible. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, the comprehensive trace-driven computer simulation is used in general access patterns. Our simulation results show that the <I>cache hit ratio</I> (CHR) in the proposed scheme is improved as much as 65.3% (with an average of 26.6%) compared to the LRU for the same workloads, and up to 6% compared to the LIRS in multi3 trace.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Supporting high update throughput is important to provide real-time location information for many applications, which involve moving objects, such as security, military, and environmental monitoring. We present an R-tree-based index structure with a family of update strategies for supporting high update throughput. It groups updates in the update buffer, and bulk-applies them into the R-tree. Extensive empirical studies have shown that it outperforms existing techniques by 2–5 times. In our experimental environment, moreover, it is able to provide the real-time update capability, while its competitors fail to do so.</P>
Constructing Impressions with Multimedia Ringtones and a Smartphone Usage Tracker

In this paper, we studied facial impression construction with smartphones in a series of experiments with two smartphone applications: SmartRing and SystemSens+. In the first experiment, impressions of faces associated with different music genres (trot vs. classical) were compared to impressions formed from a facial image alone along the social warmth and intelligence dimensions. In the second experiment, the effect of similarity attraction was investigated by manipulating the extroversion of facial images. Results indicated that impressions of faces cannot only be constructed along the social warmth and intelligence dimensions, but can also be made more or less attractive based on their similarity to the viewer`s personality. Our experiments provide interesting insights into facial impressions formed in a smartphone environment.
An Efficient Method for Proportional Differentiated Admission Control Implementation

<P>The admission control mechanism inspired in the framework of proportional differentiated services has been investigated. The mechanism provides a predictable and controllable network service for real-time traffic in terms of blocking probability. Implementation of proportional differentiated admission control is a complicated computational problem. Previously, asymptotic assumptions have been used to simplify the problem, but it is unpractical for real-world applications. We improve previous solutions of the problem and offer an efficient nonasymptotic method for implementation of proportional differentiated admission control.</P>
Group-synchronized polling algorithm in WDM-EPON

<P>Wavelength division multiplexing-ethernet passive optical network (WDM-EPON) technology yields evolutionary advantages which enable next generation broadband access networks to overcome the bandwidth limit of EPON. To effectively share uplink resources of inter-optical network units (ONUs) in WDM-EPON, we propose a group-synchronized polling algorithm (GSPA). In GSPA, ONUs are partitioned into g (> 2) groups and each group fully uses one among m (ges 2) uplink wavelengths during a predetermined time T<SUB>Ref</SUB>. Since the starting times of groups are inter-weaved with different wavelengths to enable groups to transmit frames to an optical line terminator (OLT), the GSPA can perform dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) in parallel without wasting uplink resources. Comprehensive simulation results show that GSPA yields better performance compared with both the existing offline and on-the-fly algorithms.</P>
Constructing Perceptual Common Ground Between Human and Robot Through Joint Attention

<P>Joint attention is a communicative activity that allows social partners to share perceptual experiences by jointly attending to an environmental object. Unlike the common approach towards joint attention, which is based on the developmental view in robotics, here it is conceptualized with a psychophysical paradigm known as cueing. The triadic interaction of joint attention is formalized as the conditional probability of an attentional response for a given target candidate derived from object features and a cue derived from a human partner's indication. A robotic system to which the joint attention model is applied conducted a series of tasks to demonstrate the properties of the computational model. The robotic system successfully performed the tasks, which could not be specified by the information derived from a target object alone; furthermore, the system demonstrated how perceptual and selection ambiguity is resolved through joint attentive interaction and made to converge into a common perceptual state. The results imply that a perceptual common ground is constructed on the triadic relationship between user, robot, and objects through joint attentive interaction.</P>
