This study analyzed the microfinance operations in Uganda since the 90s. It has established that despite the challenges faced during the introduction, unregulated growth and maturity stages, the different strategies by the government, civil society organizations and individuals under the repackaging phase will strengthen the industry. Recommendations are made on how to revitalize the industry in its crusade to alleviate poverty by providing services to the active poor, extending credit and providing savings facilities.
In Whose Backyard? : Carnage on Ugandan Roads

This paper illustrates psycho economic trends on long term partnerships based on good governance across many sectors and disciplines. Setting targets for accident reduction provide a way to minimize carnage on Ugandan roads. Whereas government policies and legal frameworks are the starting point, enforcement and community involvement have a great impact on proper road use.
Universal Primary Education and Teachers' Awareness of its Implementation

This paper illuminates the relationship between Universal Primary Education (UPE) and teachers' awareness of its implementation. A systematic random sampling method was used. Four hundred and nine primary teachers were selected from 45 government and private primary schools. ANOV A, t-test and means were used to analyze and present the information. Findings revealed that teachers in government and private schools significantly differed in levels of awareness of UPE. Equally so, when results were disaggregated within gender, teaching levels and school type, teachers differed in levels of awareness. However, there was no statistical significant difference in levels of awareness between female teachers in government primary schools and male teachers in private primary schools. The study concludes by recommending among others, that teachers be encouraged to develop, use and display UPE materials. Secondly, teachers should participate in both extractive and action research to generate information for advancement of UPE. Thirdly, schools should conduct intensified internal and external refresher courses for teachers to internalize education policies. However, the role of government to disseminate literature to demystify UPE should be emphasized.
Universal Primary Education at Crossroads in Developing Countries : Evidence from Uganda

Drastic enrolment, a product of accessing and promoting equity education poses challenges to achieving the Millennium Development Goal of achieving universal primary education. Generally, literature on high enrolment and its impact on headteachers’ efficiency to plan school activities appear scanty in sub-Saharan African countries. The aim of this study therefore was to assess the impact of Universal Primary Education enrolment and how it affects headteachers’ efficiency in planning school activities. Using knowledge, opinions and views from 120 respondents on planning for enrolment from 20 primary schools the results show effects of enrolment for school activities. The respondents, however, had divergent opinions and views on headteachers’ efficiency to plan school activities. On the overall high enrolment has to a greater extent affected planning of school activities. The study recommends that headteachers should make evaluation reports on planning challenges for joint discussion and designing of appropriate strategies to deal with increased enrolment.

Uganda cultural institutions that have been functional for the last 14 years had been abolished in 1967. It took 21 years for them to be reinstated. Restoration allowed traditional and cultural leaders to re-organize and regain a measure of authority. A struggle to achieve restoration, however, is still a myth for clan leaders and supporters of some kingdoms like Bwamba/Bakonzo, Kigezi and Ankole. These kingdoms are experiencing disagreements between the various stakeholders. A source of controversy is some members of society argue that restoring the kingdom would be a waste of resources. In case of Ankole, Prince Barigye in knowledge that installed traditional or cultural leaders' thrive on the kingdom's population support, should mobilize for cultural versions that promote harmony; because culture transcends politics and all forms of technological, social and economic advancement.
