The assessment of seismic site effects such as ground motion and permanent displacement requires the accurate description of the soil's stress-strain-strength relationship under irregular cyclic loading from small to medium and at large strains. The main objective of this paper is to enhance and validate the performance of an elastoplastic constitutive law in modelling non-linear soil behaviour, with particular attention to the stiffness and damping evolution with deformation. First, a simple and rational strategy is presented to derive model parameters related to shear hardening based on experimental data. Secondly, as the elastoplastic law tends to overestimate damping in the large strain range in comparison with experimental data (Ishihara, 1996; Puzrin, 2012), a new parameter is introduced in the model to overcome this issue. The modified model response exhibits lower stiffness than the standard one. For sands, an effective reduction of the damping factor is achieved and good agreement is obtained for hysteretic loop and straindependent stiffness and damping curves. For clays, the reduction in damping is also achieved for large strains, but it also has a significant effect on the soil stiffness. Finally, numerical simulations of one-dimensional ground seismic response show that for sands the new parameter has no visible effect on the seismic soil response due to maximum shear strain level achieved, while for clays the reduction in both damping and stiffness occurs.

Risk factors for hospital mortality in intensive care unit survivors: a retrospective cohort study

Background Deaths can occur after a patient has survived treatment for a serious illness in an intensive care unit (ICU). Mortality rates after leaving the ICU can be considered indicators of health care quality. This study aims to describe risk factors and mortality of surviving patients discharged from an ICU in a university hospital. Methods Retrospective cohort study carried out from January 2017 to December 2018. Data on age, sex, length of hospital stay, diagnosis on admission to the ICU, hospital discharge outcome, presence of infection, and Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS) III prognostic score were collected. Infected patients were considered as those being treated for an infection on discharge from the ICU. Patients were divided into survivors and non-survivors on leaving the hospital. The association between the studied variables was performed using the logistic regression model. Results A total of 1,025 patients who survived hospitalization in the ICU were analyzed, of which 212 (20.7%) died after leaving the ICU. When separating the groups of survivors and non-survivors according to hospital outcome, the median age was higher among non-survivors. Longer hospital stays and higher SAPS III values were observed among non-survivors. In the logistic regression, the variables age, length of hospital stay, SAPS III, presence of infection, and readmission to the ICU were associated with hospital mortality. Conclusions Infection on ICU discharge, ICU readmission, age, length of hospital stay, and SAPS III score increased risk of death in ICU survivors.

Traumatic dental injury can result in avulsion of anterior teeth. In young patients, it is a challenge to the dental professional because after replantation, late complications such as ankylosis require tooth extraction. Although prosthetic and orthodontic treatment, and implant placement have been described as the options for intervention, autogenous tooth transplantation could be an effective procedure in growing patients if there is a suitable donor tooth available. This case presents the treatment of a patient who suffered a traumatic injury at 9 years old with avulsion of tooth 21, which had been replanted, and intrusion of tooth 11. Both teeth ankylosed; thus they were removed and autotransplantation of premolars was carried out. After transplantation, the tooth underwent root canal treatment because of pulpal necrosis. Orthodontic treatment began 3 months after transplantation and during 7 years' follow-up the aesthetics and function were maintained without signs of resorption.

Bioactive peptides (BAPs) derived from samples of animals and plants have been widely recommended and consumed for their beneficial properties to human health and to control several diseases. This work presents the applications of experimental designs (DoE) used to perform factor screening and/or optimization focused on finding the ideal hydrolysis condition to obtain BAPs with specific biological activities. The collection and discussion of articles revealed that Box Behnken Desing and Central Composite Design were the most used. The main parameters evaluated were pH, time, temperature and enzyme/substrate ratio. Among vegetable protein sources, soy was the most used in the generation of BAPs, and among animal proteins, milk and shrimp stood out as the most explored sources. The degree of hydrolysis and antioxidant activity were the most investigated responses in obtaining BAPs. This review brings new information that helps researchers apply these DoE to obtain high-quality BAPs with the desired biological activities.
