• Physical and Psychosocial Outcomes Affecting Quality of Life of Children with Chronic Kidney Disease-An Integrative Review

        Bejerano,Ivy Lynne Alcazar 계명대학교 간호과학연구소 2016 계명간호과학 Vol.20 No.1

Purpose: This paper presents an integrative review aimed at examining the findings of existing research studies (2000-2014) on physical and psychosocial outcomes affecting quality of life of children with chronic kidney disease. Methods: Systematic computer searches were conducted using PubMed, PsycINFO, Science Direct and CINAHL databases covering the period January 2000 to December 2014. Data were analyzed and the results are presented using the conceptual model of Health Related Quality of Life by Wilson and Cleary. Results: The review found information on factors affecting overall quality of life of children with CKD receiving hemodialysis categorized as biological factors, symptoms experience, functional status and general health perception. The socio-demographic characteristics and environmental factors contributed to the quality of life of children diagnosed with CKD. Conclusion: The results will provide an important insight in optimizing the assessment of factors affecting overall quality of life of children with CKD. Furthermore, it will assist in providing an individualized and effective nursing care specifically tailored to the physical, emotional, psychosocial and developmental needs of vulnerable pediatric population.

        Bejerano,Ivy Lynne Alcazar 계명대학교 간호과학연구소 2015 계명간호과학 Vol.19 No.2

Purpose: This article reviewed the predictors of acceptability and barriers that prevent women from receiving HPV vaccination. Methods: Published articles from 2006 – 2014 were searched using database such as PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE and Science Direct showing abstracts and full texts on factors affecting HPV vaccination. Results: 32 articles were included. Participants are from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds involving parents with daughters and/or young women less than 20 years old. Five relevant themes were used as framework: knowledge and awareness on HPV infection and cervical cancer; pragmatic sexual behavior concerns; perceived risk of infection; the safety, efficacy and cost effectiveness of HPV vaccines, and perceived clinicians and peer support. Conclusion: The results will bring further awareness to practitioners in providing client-centered approach of addressing the common barriers affecting their intention to receive HPV vaccines. This information will also provide an avenue to further improve and strengthen the campaign against cervical cancer.

Fairness and Load Balancing in Wireless LANs Using Association Control

Bejerano, Y.,Seung-Jae Han,Li Li Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2007 IEEE/ACM transactions on networking Vol.15 No.3

The traffic load of wireless LANs is often unevenly distributed among the access points (APs), which results in unfair bandwidth allocation among users. We argue that the load imbalance and consequent unfair bandwidth allocation can be greatly reduced by intelligent association control. In this paper, we present an efficient solution to determine the user-AP associations for max-min fair bandwidth allocation. We show the strong correlation between fairness and load balancing, which enables us to use load balancing techniques for obtaining optimal max-min fair bandwidth allocation. As this problem is NP-hard, we devise algorithms that achieve constant-factor approximation. In our algorithms, we first compute a fractional association solution, in which users can be associated with multiple APs simultaneously. This solution guarantees the fairest bandwidth allocation in terms of max-min fairness. Then, by utilizing a rounding method, we obtain the integral solution from the fractional solution. We also consider time fairness and present a polynomial-time algorithm for optimal integral solution. We further extend our schemes for the on-line case where users may join and leave dynamically. Our simulations demonstrate that the proposed algorithms achieve close to optimal load balancing (i.e., max-min fairness) and they outperform commonly used heuristics.

Cell Breathing Techniques for Load Balancing in Wireless LANs

Bejerano, Y.,Seung-Jae Han IEEE 2009 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MOBILE COMPUTING Vol.8 No.6

Maximizing network throughput while providing fairness is one of the key challenges in wireless LANs (WLANs). This goal is typically achieved when the load of access points (APs) is balanced. Recent studies on operational WLANs, however, have shown that AP load is often substantially uneven. To alleviate such imbalance of load, several load balancing schemes have been proposed. These schemes commonly require proprietary software or hardware at the user side for controlling the user-AP association. In this paper we present a new load balancing technique by controlling the size of WLAN cells (i.e., AP's coverage range), which is conceptually similar to cell breathing in cellular networks. The proposed scheme does not require any modification to the users neither the IEEE 802.11 standard. It only requires the ability of dynamically changing the transmission power of the AP beacon messages. We develop a set of polynomial time algorithms that find the optimal beacon power settings which minimize the load of the most congested AP. We also consider the problem of network-wide min-max load balancing. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed method is comparable with or superior to the best existing association-based methods.

      • Health Related Quality of Life in Migrant and Biracial Children

Bejerano. Ivy Lynne Alcazar 계명대학교 간호과학연구소 2015 계명간호과학 Vol.19 No.1

Purpose: This review article aimed to provide comprehensive understanding on HRQOL of migrant and biracial children specifically on physical, social, emotional and mental wellbeing. Method: Published articles from 1995 - 2014 were searched using databases such as PubMED, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Science Direct and Social Sciences showing abstracts, full texts and reports on the health - related status of migrant and biracial children. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 40 qualified articles were included in the review process. Results: Articles were quantitative studies, written in English and migrant children without acute or chronic illness. Health Related Quality of Life in migrant and biracial children showed the high incidence of malnutrition affecting physical wellbeing; social functioning including poor school performance and experience of racial discrimination; emotional and mental health showed high incidence of depression, suicidal attempts and violent behaviors. Conclusion: Through the assessment of HRQOL in migrant and biracial children, it will assist the health care provider in identifying the developmental needs of children and prevent future problems resulting from ineffective cognitive, emotional and psychosocial development of biracial children.

      • Effectiveness of Kangaroo Mother care in Low Birth Weight Infants

Ivy Lynne Bejerano 계명대학교 간호과학연구소 2013 계명간호과학 Vol.17 No.1

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) compared to Conventional Method Care (CMC) in improving physiologic outcomes of low birth weight (LBW) infants across diverse culture. Methods: Published randomized controlled trial studies from 1997 - 2007 were searched using CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed and Cochrane showing the effects of KMC. Meta - analysis was carried out using calculation of Relative Risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI), mean and effect size for dichotomous and continuous outcomes. Results: 6 out of 14 studies qualified for inclusion criteria. The use of KMC showed improvement in oxygen saturation, daily weight gain and length of hospital stay (effect sizes of 1.28, 0.54 and 0.18, respectively). 2 out of 6 studies showed significant result in improving body temperature and anthropometric measurements such as head circumference and length (effect size 0.48 and 0.32). KMC was found to be associated with decreasing mortality rate among infants. Conclusion: The evidence from this study supports the use of KMC in improving the physiologic outcomes and decrease the mortality rate among LBW infants. Further interventional studies are recommended to evaluate the effects of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) among premature infants.
