Surface analysis of GeC prepared by reactive pulsed laser deposition technique

Amorphous germanium carbide (a-Ge_(1-x)C_x) thin films were prepared by reactive pulsed laser deposition technique using several methane pressures. Surface analysis was performed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to examine the composition and elemental bonding at the surface of the material. Optical analysis was carried out by spectroscopic ellipsometry to study the optical constants (n and k) and other parameters of the film. Results indicate that the carbon atoms to be incorporated in the germanium lattice, forming a-Ge_(1-x)C_x alloy, for concentrations below about 10 atomic % where the Ge atoms are uniformly distributed. There is formation of graphitic agglomerates for higher carbon concentrations.
Microstructure and Tensile Properties of Tungsten Heavy Alloys

The main object of this research was to examine the effect of sintering conditions on the microstructure of tungsten heavy alloys and how the resulting modification of the microstructure can be used to optimize their mechanical properties. Alloys composed of 88%, 93% and 95% wt. of tungsten and the balance is Ni: Fe in the ratio of 7:3 were sintered at different temperatures for different sintering holding times in hydrogen atmosphere. It was shown that the mechanical properties of the alloys, and especially their ductility, are harmed when tungsten grains are contiguous.

YBa2Cu3O7-δ (or YBCO) superconductors added with various concentrations of dysprosium oxide nanoparticles (NP-Dy2O3) were prepared using the solid-state process. The additive NP-Dy2O3 has a size of about 10 nm and presents a para/ferromagnetic transition at about 300 K. The characterization of samples was probed via XRD, TEM, SEM, DC magnetization, and AC susceptibility measurements. Some models were employed to compute superconducting parameters like intragranular critical current density under a magnetic field (Jcm(H)), the density of intragranular pinning force for Abrikosov vortex (εg(0)), intergranular critical current density (Jc,inter), intergranular electrical character, superconductor grain volume fraction (fs). The correlation between these parameters and microstructure was discussed. The inclusion of NP-Dy2O3 does not alter the structural properties and the spatial growth of YBa2Cu3O7-δ. NP-Dy2O3 addition led to significant enhancements of Jcm(H) and εg(0). The decrement in Jc,inter was attributed to the change of grain boundary characteristics that transformed from SNS to SINS junction due to NP-Dy2O3 addition.
