        Is There Any Association Between Childhood Traumatic Experiences, Dissociation and Psychotic Symptoms in Schziophrenic Patients?

        Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the rates childhood traumatic experiences (CTEs) of schizophrenia patients and to examine relationship between childhood traumatic experiences, dissociation and psychotic symptoms. Methods: One hundred schizophrenia patients who had 5 or 5 points below in Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S) and who were not in active psychotic episode and 50 healthy siblings who grew up in the same environment with the patients were included to the study. Structured Clinical Interview for DSM IV, Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms, Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms, Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES), CGI-S, Global Assessment of Functioning Scale and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-28) applied to the patients. Results: Childhood abuse subscales and DES scores were statistically higher in the patient group (p<0.001). We determined moderately significant positive correlation between CTQ-28 and DES. We determined moderately significant positive correlation between CTQ total scores and persecutory delusions, delusions of reference, ability to feel intimacy and closeness; relationship with friends and peers. Also, there was a significant positive correlation between persecutory delusions and CTQ-total, DES-total and all subscales of CTQ-28. Conclusion: Clinicians should inquire about CTEs to develop comprehensive formulations and treatment plans among schizophrenia.

      • Disorder induced polymorphic transitions in the high hydrogen density compound Sr(BH<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>(NH<sub>3</sub>BH<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>

        <P>The new compound Sr(BH4)2(NH3BH3)2 has been synthesized and characterized with <I>in situ</I> powder X-ray diffraction and fast (28 or 60 kHz) magic angle spinning <SUP>1</SUP>H, <SUP>11</SUP>B and <SUP>15</SUP>N NMR and structurally optimized with density functional theory calculations. This investigation reveals complex structural rearrangements for this compound as a function of temperature. A room temperature orthorhombic polymorph, α-Sr(BH4)2(NH3BH3)2, with the space group symmetry <I>Pbca</I>, has been determined with a layered structure of alternating ammonia borane and Sr(BH4)2, partially stabilized by dihydrogen bonding. Surprisingly the crystal symmetry is lowered upon heating, as evidenced both by <I>in situ</I> synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and <SUP>11</SUP>B MAS NMR data, resulting in an intermediate polymorph, β′-Sr(BH4)2(NH3BH3)2, present from ∼65 to 115 °C. β-Sr(BH4)2(NH3BH3)2, a sub structure of the β′-polymorph showing higher symmetry with the space group symmetry <I>Aba</I>2, forms upon further heating. <I>Ab initio</I> molecular dynamics simulations show that the ammonia borane molecule can dynamically alternate between a bidentate and a tridentate coordination to Sr at finite temperature. The dynamic properties of the ammonia borane molecule in the solid state are suggested to cause the observed structural complexity. Based on simultaneous thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and mass spectrometry, the decomposition of the compound was investigated showing a stabilization of ammonia borane in the structure relative to other metal borohydride ammonia boranes and neat ammonia borane.</P>

      • Self-Assembly of Dendronized Perylene Bisimides into Complex Helical Columns

        <P>The synthesis of perylene 3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic acid bisimides (PBIs) dendronized with first-generation dendrons containing 0 to 4 methylenic units (<I>m</I>) between the imide group and the dendron, (3,4,5)12G1-<I>m</I>-PBI, is reported. Structural analysis of their self-organized arrays by DSC, X-ray diffraction, molecular modeling, and solid-state <SUP>1</SUP>H NMR was carried out on oriented samples with heating and cooling rates of 20 to 0.2 °C/min. At high temperature, (3,4,5)12G1-<I>m</I>-PBI self-assemble into 2D-hexagonal columnar phases with intracolumnar order. At low temperature, they form orthorhombic (<I>m</I> = 0, 2, 3, 4) and monoclinic (<I>m</I> = 1) columnar arrays with 3D periodicity. The orthorhombic phase has symmetry close to hexagonal. For <I>m</I> = 0, 2, 3, 4 ,they consist of tetramers as basic units. The tetramers contain a pair of two molecules arranged side by side and another pair in the next stratum of the column, turned upside-down and rotated around the column axis at different angles for different <I>m</I>. In contrast, for <I>m</I> = 1, there is only one molecule in each stratum, with a four-strata 2<SUB>1</SUB> helical repeat. All molecules face up in one column, and down in the second column, of the monoclinic cell. This allows close and extended π-stacking, unlike in the disruptive up–down alteration from the case of <I>m</I> = 0, 2, 3, 4. Most of the 3D structures were observed only by cooling at rates of 1 °C/min or less.
