On Temperature Rise Within the Shear Bands in Bulk Metallic Glasses

Room temperature deformation process in a bulk metallic glassy sample was studied by using a hydraulic thermomechanicalsimulator. The temperature rise during each separate shear band propagation event was measured with a high data acquisitionfrequency by a thermocouple welded to the sample. Calculation showed that when propagation of the well developedshear bands takes place along the entire sample the temperature inside the shear band should be close to the glass-transitiontemperature. It was also possible to resolve the temporal stress distribution and a double-stage character of stress drops wasalso observed. The obtained results are compared with the literature data obtained by infrared camera measurements andthe results of fi nite elements modeling.
Fabrication of AA2024/SiCp Metal Matrix Composite by Mechanical Alloying

Mechanical alloying is a widely used alternative to the liquid-phase method of embedding reinforcements to manufacturemetal matrix composites (MMC). In this research, high-energy ball milling was used to distribute various volume fractionsof sub-micron-sized SiCpparticles (2, 10, and 20 vol%) in AA2024 aluminum powder alloy, focusing on powder morphologyand milling conditions. An increase in the full width at half-maximum and the shifting of peaks at higher angles wereobserved after mechanical alloying. These examinations were attributed to changes in the lattice parameters of the matrixalloy. It was noted that the temperature and loading pressure during the die compaction stages of MMC powders directlyaffect the compact density, whereas the volume fraction of SiCpchanges hardness. Compression testing, conducted at elevatedtemperatures to evaluate the plastic properties of the material, showed sufficient ductility characteristics for thermomechanicalprocessing.

This work studied the influence of thermomechanical treatment on the mechanical properties, structure, and crystallizationof the Zr65.5Ni16Cu8.5Al10metallic glass alloy. It established that thermomechanical treatment significantly affects themechanical properties of the alloy while maintaining its amorphous structure due to the formation of regions of chemicalinhomogeneity in the amorphous matrix. In addition, shear deformation affects the initial crystallization of the alloy. As aresult, there is a transition from one-stage crystallization to two-stage crystallization with a strain increase.
