Vol.21 No.1
This study aimed to investigate the effects of mothers’ perceptions about early childhood English education on preschoolers’ attitudes toward learning English. Totally 300 five-year-olds were interviewed, and their mothers participated in the survey. The results of this study are as follows: First, The mothers of the English immersion educational institution supported more ‘early English exposure’ and ‘English teaching materials’ and recognized the positive effect of English. On the other hand, the mothers of general institutions tended to pursue ‘balanced development of Korean and English languages’, ‘parents’ teaching’, and ‘unconventional teaching methods’. Second, there was no difference in children’s attitudes toward learning between two groups. Children of immersion group showed higher level only in the factor of ‘perceptions about care-givers’ encouragement and expectation’. Third, mother’s perceptions about early childhood English education did not affect the children’s preferences of English activities, regardless of groups. Fourth, mother’s perceptions about early childhood English education influenced ‘recognition of parents’ encouragement and expectation’, ‘interests about foreign countries’, and ‘anxiety for learning English’, which were sub-factors of children’s motivation for learning English.
