The clinical data presented is based on 16 uterine rupture during labor among 9,926 deliveries at the Kwangju Christian Hospital over 6 year period. 1. The incidence of uterine rupture was 0.16% or 1 : 620 deliveries, tending to increase year by year for the 6 year period. Uterine rupture occurred in 4 women after admission. In 12 women, rupture occurred prior to admission. 2. The age distribution was from 24 to 40 years and the highest age group were 25-30 and 35-40. 3. Incidence was most common among para 5 or more but there was one case in a primigravida. 4. Classifying the type of rupture, 9 cases were spontaneous, 5 cases were traumatic and 4 cases were rupture of a previous cesarean section scar. 6. On admission, mean Hgb. was 10.5gm%, and there were 5 cases in which systolic blood pressure was below 90mmHg. 7. The site of uterine rupture: lower segment 11 cases, corpus and fundus 2 cases, and both sites 3 cases. 8. Route of delivery: Transabdominal delivery 15 cases and vaginal delivery 1 case. 9. In the management of uterine rupture, total hysterectomy was performed in 12 patients, simple closure in 3 patients and subtotal hysterectomy in 1 patient. 10. Complications occurred in 6 patients. There were 2 cases of retroperitoneal hematoma, 1 case of bladder rupture, 1 case of pyelonephritis, 1 case of bladder wall hematoma and 1 case of pseudomonas sepsis. 11. Maternal motality rate was 12.5%(2 cases) and fetal motality rate was 81.3%(13 cases).
